Rose and Richard on a mission - Tour of Aotearoa for Kids Bike Taupo
Richard Balm and Rose Blackley depart from Cape Reinga on the 10th February. They hope to complete the 3,000km to Bluff, self-supported, in under 30 days.
Tour Aotearoa has six waves of 100-120 riders in each wave, using the NZ Cycle Trails and back country roads. This ride, designed by Jonathan Kennett, is the being held for the second time. There is no entry fee, just a donation to a cycling charity plus the offsetting of the rider’s carbon emissions for the journey.
Richard and Rose have named Kids Bike Taupo as their charity and invite sponsors. Donations start at 1 cent per kilometre ($30.00) and multiples of 1 cent are encouraged.
Established in 2012 from a cycling summit, Kids Bike Taupo schedules regular visits to the schools as part of the sports programme, to encourage a safer and healthier community. Although Taupo District Council contributes $5,000.00 annually, fund raising is always required for bikes, ongoing equipment replacement, fuel, and repairs. 7,800 riders per year benefit from the organisation, led by Cath Oldfield. Both Rose and Richard have great respect for Cath, stating, “Her patience, fortitude and contribution is much greater than our one-time cycling effort “.
