Cyclists and motorists still need to be aware

With the triathlon season almost over road users still need to be aware of each other.  Taupo and other regions continue to have cycle related events throughout the year.  Consequently, there are always people road and recreational cycling.  Getting people onto their bikes, whether recreationally or for training purposes, will have the flow on affect of them deciding to get from A to B around town by bike.

Bike Taupo has been busy during the recent Bikewise week, including a great stand at the local Go by Bike Day on Wednesday 28th February which attracted some 300 people.  We also advertised in the local Taupo Times, one ad aimed at motorists and the other aimed at cyclists. The later was included in the Ironman Supplement to Taupo Times on Friday.   We believe our road signs encouraging motorists to give bikes 1.5 metres space when passing, has been very effective in raising awareness of cyclists using roads over the past 3 seasons.  Our roadside signage comes down after the April Rotorua to Taupo 100K Flyer event.  We have always believed that taking the signage down over winter and putting it back up in the summer has a greater impact to motorists.

With the increase in cycle advocacy work by various groups locally and nationally the awareness of cyclists and their activities is on the rise.  This can only benefit all road users.
