Track Crew Update

Track Crew Update

The new Steam Field track is getting closer to having the first part open. Look for the new sign off Outback which will lead you down an old skidder track then onto the new single track. Watch the website and Facebook for further updates.

We have picked up funding for a number of projects. Rotary have given us some dollars for improvements on the Rotary Ride which will be undertaken around the Ladder bridge area.  We have also picked up some funding to build a bridge to go over Scrag's track so the Scrag's return track can then align with the car park tunnel. This will make it much easier for the people returning to the car park.

We are also waiting for a building permit for the new Rotary Ride bridge.

April Trail Recommendations:

Kids Bike Taupo Update

Kids Bike Taupo Update

At the recent IronKidz event (part of the Iron Man festivities) Kids BT made 4 bikes available for kids to compete on. Cath was there with bikes and jumps and seesaw for everyone to ride in the middle of Lake Terrace.  IronKidz has decided to give Kids BT $1 for every entry each year.

Cath was also at the BMX open day with the Kids BT bikes on Sunday 23rd of March. This meant many kids who would otherwise not have the opportunity were able to have a go on the track. As a result of this Lake Taupo Cycling Trust (Bikefest) has given some cash support to Kids BT and there will be after school BMX on Mondays with the Kids BT bikes available.

Bike Taupo would like to acknowledge the support of IronKidz and Bikefest in our quest to get kids on bikes.

Nga Haeranga (New Zealand Cycle Trail) - Great Lake Trail Opening, Taupō

Rt Hon John Key officialy opened the Great Lake Trail on the shores of Lake Taupō on Thursday 3rd of April at 2:30pm. The Great Lake Trail is another trail opened by the Nga Haeranga (New Zealand Cycle Trail).

The Great Lake trail was built by Bike Taupō Advocacy Group Incorporated and Chairman Rowan Sapsford stated “the trail has been developed with the support of Ngati Tuwharetoa, Department of Conservation, central and local government and many local businesses, turning 2.4 million dollars of the Nga Haeranga funding into a trail valued at over 4 million dollars”. He also went on to say “thanks to this support we are able to achieve results that bring significant economic and sustainable results to get more people into beautiful parts of our country”.

Hon Julie Anne Genter said ”the positive benefits for New Zealand’s people through the use of the Nga Haeranga trails has had a significant impact on our communities”.

The benefits for Taupō are creating and sustaining more tourism opportunities that flow on through the community through the creation of jobs and business.

Rt Hon John Key mentioned “the future of the cycle trails is bright, with more people choosing New Zealand as a destination for cycling”.

Bike Taupō – Ride Central is the only silver level ride centre accredited by the International Mountain Bike Assocition (IMBA) in New Zealand. The completion of the Great Lake Trail is another stunning ride in the Taupō district.

Jonathan Kennett from the Nga Haeranga management team on his last inspection quoted “the newly completed section as “the best Grade 3 single track in the country”.

Having such support from everyone involved will ensure the Great Lake Trail continues to be a success and will be added to every cyclists list to ride.
