New Track: Outback

The Outback

485885

For those that want to check it out:

Bike straight ahead at the gum trees in the Drone track, through the gate and carry on down the hill under the pines. Go to the right a bit about two thirds down the hill and you will find a cut track to get through the blackberry.
Then drop of the ledge and enter the new up hill. It’s a long way up to the top so have fun! When you get to the top take the little track out onto the road and turn right going up the hill, then turn left at the old skid site onto the new track again.
This will take you over to the bigger trees at the end of this single track. Go left and follow the track around to the thermal area (Very close to the old ice cream hill). Point and blast down the road watch out for the big rocks on the road. This will bring you back to the old gate area, where we have built a new track up the slope, follow the fence line for a little bit it - this will take you to another crossing, then climb the hill and ride home via the drone.

Have fun getting lost but it will be worth it.
We will try and get some temporary signs up soon and as soon as we sort out some funding the loop will be extended.

So watch this space!

Cheers

New Tracks

The Track Crew have been chipping away at some tracks for the last few months !

Check out the Te Toki gully track in town. We are still working on Harvey St gully, but there are lots of NIMBY’s ("not in my back yard!") in the area, which have slowed us up a bit.

On the bright side the Waikato tracks are coming along with only one set of steps and bridge left to pull out and we have about half of the new track to get around the zig zag build.
We might call for a working bee to help out some time on this one. We will be still aiming to link into the tunnel tracks to make another great loop.

Just a note: The track is very tight and technical and runs in native bush most of the way. Watch out for walkers!

Peter Mac has started building the new track up to the top of the hill in the old "H‰nsel and Gretel" area. (It's in Zone 10 on the map in the car park). At the moment we will only get to the top of the hill then we  have to wait for some more funding, but the aim is to make a big loop single track going right around the block and head back to the young pines area.

Outback

Thanks to The Last of Summer Wine Building Co (Banger & Dave) the Out Back track is now finished!

Banga and Dave spent last week building the two new ramps that take you over the fences. This completes the new loop which seems to be a winner with people. We still have the odd sign to put in.

July News

Te Totara gully is coming along slowly.

You can now ride down the steep hill and around to the bridge bypassing the steps. Be carefully riding over the bridge! DoC are going to put another handrail on soon - it’s a bit of a drop into the cave.

The boys at Helistar flew some logs into the gully further down for us and we are now building another switch back corner to get around that set of steps.

After that we will just have two sets of steps to take out and then will take on the big hill at the top. This requires a zig, zag, zig, zag and another zig to get to the top, so this may take a little bit of time to build.

If you haven’t found it yet: we have built a little track up to the Tunnel track so you don’t have to ride on the road.

All the other tracks seem to be in good order just the odd mud hole on the Redwoods and we have a plan for that.
The people night riding say that the glow worms are great in Totara gully - so check them out!

Other tracks on the go are:

  1. Rainbow Point gully with a road crossing over SH1
  2. A track system from the end of the sewerage plant track past Cheery Island up to Bungy. A lot of this is already built and being ridden (downhill anyway).
  3. More tracks off the Outback including another uphill and a down hill going over some more horse crossings back to the Corner Shop Connection another track from the bottom of Cole’s killer down to Young pines.

June Update

Helistar Hill

Peter Mac and Barry spend 4 days changing the old steep hill into a new zig zag last week. It will be a bit soft for a little while but no matter what it will still be better than the old hill.

Many thanks to DoC for letting us change the hill.

The new uphill from Huka Falls to Helistar

Te Totara Track

We starting to chip away in that gully so we will end up with anther big loop, but this time it will be in all native bush. This track will link back to the Tunnel and Helistar.

Riders going the wrong way in Wairakei

Can people stick to the direction signs please. A few locals taking short cuts to  tracks by riding the wrong direction on another track. It’s not only dangerous for yourselves and other riders but in increases the wear on some tracks that were not build for riding in that direction.

Slips and fallen trees

We have had the odd slip of late, can anybody who comes across one please give us a ring as sometimes we don’t find them for a week and we can sort them on our next ride if we know we need the tools.

Cheers
