Direction Change to Wairakei Track

In Wairakei we have made a direction change on a track.

The track that links to Young Pines from the Corner Shop Connection is now one way (down hill only) only!  Now that the Slalom track feeds onto this track as well, we have to many bikes coming down the track to be safe. Can you now please bike up the road to enter The Young Pines by going over the cattle stop. We will look at building a new link track in the future.

Many thanks to those that turned up to the working bee last Saturday to work on the new track.

Those that are out and about will also see changes on the Rotary Ride.

We now have, after 4 years, got an agreement with the Gun Club and DoC to run the track in DoC land 2 meters away from were we before. This save us a few bucks but most important is the Rotary Ride now runs only on  public land. Many thanks to Patuiwi Trust with out them we would have not got the Rotary ride built 4 years ago

The other change is the new alignment on the gully down hill this is both to save on maintenance and make the track more user friendly.

Cheers

The Bungy track is now open!

Some signs are still to be put in, so follow your nose from the Control Gates, pass the sewerage plant, down to Cherry Island then across the car park. Head up and around on the grass to the house’s at the top of the grass and then follow the track up to the Bungy.

A great way to get into town for a coffee with out taking on Spa Road. Remember its two way and walkers also use the track.

Many thanks to Rotary and Groundeffect for donating the cash and to the work parties who turned up at working bee’s.

New track

Jayden Harris and Scott Cowie have built a new Grade 5 track with jumps, drops and dips.

It has chicken chutes so you don’t have top take on the jumps. Its lots of fun and ends up close to the start of Slaylom.

It starts opposite Retro  and make a nice change to the normal tracks plus test your riding skills.

Hi everyone,

Thanks to all the crew that helped with marshaling at the Moon Ride and also to Murray Fleming from Event Promotions for his continued support of Bike Taupo.

The donation we receive goes into maintaining the track system and without this extra income we would have a funding short fall.
If anybody can help with marshalling can you let us know and I will put your name down.
It’s about the best working bee you can ever do, biking for 6 or 12 hrs is much better than cutting blackberries....

We have started work on the Bungy track - been a lot of head scratching to get around some rock formations but will be a great track when it’s finished.

All the other tracks are riding well just watch out for the odd tree down at this time of year. We had trouble with one horse learning how to walk up the ramps, thus the grating being put in. If you see horse’s in any of our areas let us now ASAP please!

On a very sad note we were informed that, John Taylor, has passed away on Friday night at home.

John was not only the treasurer but spent many hours per week working on the tracks.

He did a huge amount of work on the Rotary Ride right from the beginning when we started building. He went through the track taking out the tree roots and getting all the water tables working. He then did the deviations above the ladder bridge to make the grades easier.

He rode the track most days and even had an article in the Dominion Paper on the work he did for us.

I am sure that all bikers will join me in passing on our condolences to his family

Updates from the Track Crew

First stage of the Bungy track is now open.

We have done the hard part first, you can now ride down to Cherry Island with out having to get of and walk. We will put the signs in as soon as they are made, so in between times just take it easy and watch out for other users.
If you are taking kids on the track, try to ride down the hill as the uphill will be a bit testing until it hardens up.
Thanks to the crew that turned up for the short work party last weekend made a big difference in getting the job done this week!

Can local riders keep of Te Totara Gully track system while its wet, please.
The track just turns to mud under the native bush and DoC and us end up with a lot more maintenance cost.
We would rather spend the money in better ways.

It’s the time of year when we get trees coming down on the tracks if you find any, please give us a ring or email us (details are on the web site), unless of course you can spent a few minutes and remove the obstacles yourself. If not,  we can get onto it on our next bike ride.

Cheers

Hi everybody,

I hope everyone is enjoying the new "Luge" track!

Thanks to all the people, who turned up at the working bees and helped at other times. This makes the ride up the Retro well worth it.

Lots of work is going on, most of it just keeping the tracks open and in good order. We have had a huge increase in the number of riders and thus more wear and tear to the tracks.

Thanks to Jayden for building up the corners on the Coaster - it rides much better now. We all hope John Tailor gets better soon as we are missing him and his volunteer maintenance on the Rotary Ride.

We also have received funding for the Bungy track (linking Cherry Island to Spa Road) from Rotary and Ground Effect and hope to start that one soon.

Cheers Pete M.
