1.       MISSION IMPASSABLE!

Wrong! No route is impassable for Bike Taupo and we now have three operational tunnels.  Well, we are proud as punch with our cool new tunnel under State Highway One - enter from adjacent to Helistar car park. The track down to the tunnel is funky and fun winding down through cool bush to the tunnel entrance.  Now don’t be alarmed when you bike through the tunnel with somebody following you.  Talk about freaky - it sounds as though they are sitting on top of your back tyre.  A lot of you will have already tried out this new track so you’ll know what we mean!  As the tunnel throws you out the other side you enter another cool new track that winds back up to the road level - jump across Karapiti Road and you have Inwards Goods before you as a gate-way to Wairakei Forest mountain biking. The other tunnels within Wairakei Forest are the icing on the cake horses go over we go under.

2.       BIKE TAUPO GOES TO TOWN

The committee recently toured the gully systems of the town.  These mostly lie in the Richmond Heights and Botanical Gardens areas.  A fun afternoon was had as we leisurely biked around in abnormally warm balmy weather, pushing, carrying bikes in some parts and squelching through mud in others.  Jumping over hot creeks and scouring the odd cliff face!  Who knew such adventure could be had in the middle of town!  However, we had a purpose - look for potential routes for building recreational paths through these gullies.  The outcome - successful (of course!).  These routes will allow safe access for people on or off their bike to make their way towards the lake or other neighbours and particularly useful for school children getting to and from school.  So watch for news as we work with Council in the next few months to make our dreams reality.  Oh and if you have a stash of cash to donate for building these new pathways of opportunity, in exchange for some exposure then we need to talk!! (Contact details here)

3.       ATTENTION ROAD BIKES!!

Mountain bikes and road bikes are our children!  Although it may seem like our attention is focussed mainly on our youngsters the mountain bikes we do look after our older children the road bikes!  Yes you guys have been around a lot longer than you’re hyperactive siblings, it’s just that ripping up and changing road surfaces is a lot tougher than ripping up and changing dirt!  But, here are some things to look forward to:

  • Broadlands Road Underpass:  We have advocated successfully for an underpass on Broadlands Road so the proposed Eastern Arterial will go over it, therefore not disturbing our precious newly widened road bike circuit.
  • Road Safety Campaign 2005/06:  After such an effective road sign campaign last summer we have applied for and successfully been granted funding to run the same campaign this summer! Yay!!!  Because we thought it went so well last summer we have also nominated ourselves for the CAN Cycle Friendly Award.  So keep all appendages crossed that the award wings its way to us!

4.       OFF-ROAD TRACKS - THEY GET BETTER

Oh yes - we’ve done more!! Of course with the help of our awesome volunteers and sponsors.

Remember if you’d like to lend a hand every now and then maintaining tracks; please give Pete Masters a call on 3772286 or Richard Balm on 3772121.

Rotary Ride is fast improving with new tracks around past problem areas now in full swing.  Check out the new entrance from Spa Park which makes the track it a lot easier to find.

Out at Wairakei those seven wise men are still doing the things they love - making new and improved tracks for you!  The next major for them is to tackle the old Hansel and Gretel tracks.  If you used to pedal around Wairakei around eight years ago you’ll remember these ole tracks well.

Hands up who likes pedalling up to a gate, either hoisting your poor bike over the thing (and if you are unfortunate to have one of those heavy beasts with disc brakes boo hoo) or fiddling around with gate locks to get through to other tracks - not good.  Well fingers crossed that some cattle stops will appear on Karapiti Road doing away with gates.

Another change expected is that gnarly rather uphill Inwoods Goods track.  Let’s make it easier!!

5.       WEBSITE HOTTIES:

We must have the best web managers in kilometres!  Thomas and the team at OK Computer continue to update and make better our site.  SO THANKS GUYS.  Taupo Mountain Bike Club can now be selected on the side menu bar on Bike Taupo’s website.  This will get you into their latest news, race results and other important stuff.

6.       SUBMISSIONS

We’ve been submitting like mad. Not only the underpass on Broadlands Rd with the Eastern Arterial but also the Tongariro Domain.  What do you say to a recreational path from Control Gates bridge next to the river around to the boat harbour linking up with the Great Lake Walkway? YES YES YES Lets cross those fingers and toes.  Other hopeful changes are to the speed limits on Huka Falls Road and Acacia Bay Road.  The slower we can make the traffic go the safer our bodies on bikes will be.

7.       AGM

Bike Taupo’s Annual General Meeting is fast approaching.  It was to be in October but we are hopefully having it in November.  So mark this date in your dairies:  Wednesday 16 November 7pm Taupo Events Centre Clubrooms.

8.       KINLOCH TO WHAKAIPO BAY TRACK

We have official LIFT OFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

9.       UPCOMING EVENTS

•         1 October 2005 - Day Night Thriller, Spa Park, Taupo (12 hour teams - mountain bikes)

1.       CYCLING WORKSHOP - 31 MARCH 2005

If you are interested in the future of cycling in our district then you need to be at this workshop. It’s this Thursday 31 March from 5:30pm to around 7pm in the Great Lake Centre’s East Wing. The Council’s cycle strategy document is up for renewal and it’s a chance to have your say as to what you’d like to see happen around the district (includes Turangi and Mangakino) with regard to cycle facilities and education and awareness. SO WE NEED A BIG TURNOUT OF cycle enthusiasts. Come on everyone BUY IN to your future and our children’s!

2.       NEW LOOK FOR BIKE TAUPO WEBSITE

Have you noticed how great the Bike Taupo website looks now?? Wow Thomas and Mike have been doing some hard work to getting the website looking HOT. Check it out if you’ve not visited in a while. If pictures could be turned into food - we’d feed Africa! It truly looks great. Lots of news, maps, links, a new whats on page, more user friendly and of course more pictures so you can see what we’re talking about! Use your old login to get even more user options. Forgotten the password ? No problem, just click on the link on the login page and we will email to you.

3.       MAPS AND SIGNAGE AT WAIRAKEI FOREST PARK

Bike Taupo has now produced fancy new maps of Taupo’s off-road mountain bike areas. The greatest news of all is if you get in from that wet, cold (which we know is the best kind of mountain biking!) ride this winter and your map has been in your Groundeffect back pocket safe and sound but it gets chucked in the wash it won’t be the end for it! It won’t get all bally and disappear - it will bounce back. Yep you guessed, the new maps are waterproof !!!! Look after them and they’ll look after you - purchase for a mere $2 from Corner Shop, Cycle World, Information Centre, Huka Falls Café and Rifle Range Bike Hire.

Wairakei Forest Park has also taken on a new look, new tracks are mentioned below but have you noticed the cool wooden signage which not only have directions of tracks but their grade (by a national system for grading moutain bike tracks) is noted. So if you are only a grade 2 rider you won’t end up on the Buzzard going wholly s#*t!

4.       WAIRAKEI FOREST PARK - NEW OFF ROAD TRACKS

Where do we start!!!!!

•         Redwoods is now alive and kicking with a great opening in February. If you were at it THANKS for turning up. Pictures on the website. This track meanders through the redwood forest between Huka Falls Road and the state Highway. It’s a two way track, accessible opposite Reids Farm on Huka Falls Road, State Highway One 200m South of Helistar turnoff (Kev’s track), or on Huka Falls Road 50m south of the Falls entry/exit. News Flash we have now extended this track and you can now cycle from within Huka Falls Car Park. Come off the bridge over the falls and head left, not far along is a entry to this new track which winds beside the river and up to Huka Falls Road and comes out opposite the northern entry to Redwoods. Who needs tarmac!!

•         Tank Stand Track - Ok why didn’t we think of this sooner? This track is the new track to get over to the Buzzards, Walters Wiggles etc. We used to grind our way up a four wheel drive road for eons (this is only for horses now) so now just head straight across the four wheel drive road and into another canopy of trees. It comes out halfway down that little downhill after the tank.

•         Groundeffect Grinder - takes you to the Buzzards. It’s a gut-buster and feels like it had better be taking you to the top of the world - this is because it is!! Spectacular views of Wairakei forest, Mount Tauhara towards town. Even the Ironman guys will find this a toughie.

•         Young Pines - its been renovated and titivated, its fun with a little up and lots of fast windy up and downs especially ‘the little dipper’ looks dodgy but if you let your bike go you can get up the other side in your middle cog easily! There’s even a ‘cattle stop’ to contemplate for a bit of balance and excitement.

•         Inwards and Outwards Goods - The first one of these two starts opposite Helistar intersection - instead of grinding on the tarmac past the horse treks head left of the beginning of Karapoti Road under the trees and up a single track which links onto Tourist Trap. This is a two way track. The other track heads into the Ferret from State Highway One opposite Kev’s Track entry to Redwoods. Also a two way track. These tracks are for quick and easy access into the Wairakei Park rides - again avoiding the highways.

Happy winter riding - charge up those lights!!

We’d also like to thank Groundeffect for their generous support. Their funds donated have allowed us to purchase a scrub-cutter for maintenance of the off-road tracks.

5.       CONTROL GATES BRIDGE ON-RAMP

This will be sorted hopefully shortly. After much c & c (conversation and correspondence) Transit have agreed to extend and make the onramp on the south side of the control gates more user-friendly for cyclists (especially roadies). Yipppeee so keep watching for the change.

6.       ROAD SAFETY CAMPAIGN

Our successful campaign is nearing its end (signage to come down in the next week). We are hoping to run the campaign again towards the end of 2005. We felt that taking all the signage away will be more impacting when we put it up again in October 2005. There’s been a lot of talk positive and negative from locals and visitors. It may even be used in other districts! We would do a flip flop if you could email us with you comments on how you think the campaign went and we’d do multiple flip flops if, when sending your comments, you could put on your motorist head and think like a motorist. Send them toThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. A report on the campaign will appear shortly on the website. A big thanks must go to Taupo District Council’s cycle strategy team and the Road Safety Co-ordinator for funds to make it happen! We are spoilt.

7.       KINLOCH TO WHAKAIPO BAY TRACK

Its getting closer We expect confirmation as to funding by June. If its favourable then track construction will commence soon thereafter. A subcommittee has been formed and a strategy decided upon. Its all very exciting and very real. WATCH THIS SPACE.

8.       UPCOMING EVENTS

  • •         2 April - 100K Flyer - Rotorua to Taupo for roadies
  • •         3 April - Kids Mountain Bike Jam - Wairakei Forest Park
  • •         13 April - Cateye Moonride - Rotorua teams race for mountain bikers.

1. THE TUNNELS

We now build tracks underground! You read right. We are proud to have the first purpose built bikers tunnel in the area. It’s in the Wairakei Forest Park and is really cool. A huge THANKS go to awesome support from the many members that turned up to the working B on Saturday 28th May. Thanks to you guys it was finished in a day! And a huge huge huge THANKS to Kernohan for lending the digger - these machines are amazing, cutting out many man hours of digging! Go to the website to check out the photos or better still go for a ride at Wairakei - you can’t miss it - it starts at the car park and goes beneath the horse trail this also means a new start to the corkscrew tracks. We have been given a second tunnel which will go in under the tank stand track. These tunnels mean no more conflict with those tall four legged creatures that neigh! Yay!

We are also searching high and low for funding to build an underpass beneath Craters Road and that means no more conflict with four wheeled creatures that beep and squash!

Other Wairakei News:

The other exciting thing we will let you in on is - we are hoping to make a track that will go somewhere and pass through nowhere and you’ll be able to bike from Helistar Café to the Wairakei Tracks without crossing the road. No, we can’t say any more but it should increase your life expectancy.

2. CYCLING WORKSHOP OUTCOMES

A very successful workshop hosted by the Taupo District Council took place at the end of March. The Cycle Strategy Team received some great feedback on making cycling in Taupo even better. We got to talk about the positives and negatives of being a cyclist on our Taupo roads, and provided ideas and wishes to change the culture and infrastructure for cycling. The outcomes can be viewed online.

3. WAIRAKEI FOREST PARK - MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB TEAMS RACE

Sunday 5 June 2005. Come along with $15 per rider. Rego is from 9am with race kicking off at 10am. 3.5 hours over a 6.5km track of fast fun stuff. Teams are the go with a max of 4 people allowed (or 2 or 3). Of course if you are fit and hard core then you are welcome to do the race as an individual (a little back-breaking but an achievement all the same!). Now this is the only teams race this winter so you don’t want to miss it. FREE bbq and drinks now I know you’ll be there!

Another race is scheduled for 10 July which will be a 30km or 18km ride around the fantastic Wairakei tracks.

Its forever changing out there and the latest will get you on your bikes investigating!!!!! Check out the Events Calendar on Bike Taupo’s website for details. Both races are wonderfully and fantastically sponsored by GroundEffect!

4. THE ROTARY RIDE - UPDATE

We are continually titivating this yummy track to Huka Falls and its going to be even yummier!

Before we go into these changes it must be said that all the work on the Rotary Ride can only be done by hand and volunteer labour. Those hard working people chip away at the track in their spare time and in most cases on their own spending an hour here and there - it all helps and makes the job easier and faster. SO if you like to lend a hand please give Pete Masters a call on 377 2286 or Richard Balm on 377 2121.
OK enough of begging on our knees for your invaluable help here comes the changes
  • DoC have approved changes to the hill from the ladder bridge so we will extend the single track and cut out the hill that has the green matting on it. This means the track will go all the way out to the point at much better gradient and the big bonus aside from it being easier on the dicky-ticker - the view over the river will be awesome. Aha we feel you are getting excited be patient precious as this will take a while to build and will be just chipped away at over the winter months.
  • The Huka Lodge down hill is about to be extended to come out around the blind corner on the straight - this should bring down the head on hit meter.
  • Hands up who knows the yuk pumice cutting uphill (heading back to Taupo). You know the hill you can see it before you even get to it! Well good news we will build a new single up hill only track in the vicinity which should make riding home to Taupo a bit easer on the legs and stop those interesting conflicts with downhill traffic.
  • We are laying the matting on the northern end of the track at the moment which should stop the slip sliding carnage on the papa rock.
  • Our feelers are out for funding to make a brand new entry exit in Spa Park. This should hopefully make it more obvious where the track starts!!
  • Also seeking funding to change the track currently through the new pines. At the moment it’s pretty much a straight line. We are looking to make it more interesting and have it meandering through the gully.

We believe the Rotary Ride is our most important track and therefore we need to keep improving it - it can only get better and better!

5. OTHER EARTH SHATTERING PROJECTS

Let’s make Bike Taupo’s work known in town - that’s the latest thinking of our ever brainstorming committee. We have identified these HOT projects that we could instigate:

• Put reasonable recreational paths/tracks through some of the gully systems in the town (Hyde Ave/Titoki Ave to Richmond Ave; Harvey Street/Shepherds Road to Arrowsmith Ave. We researched other countries that make use of similar reserve areas to provide biking/walking routes off the roads. Great for families, school kids etc.

• An underpass from Richmond Heights to Rainbow Point. There has sadly already been one death on the State Highway in this area. Its really hard for any age to determine how fast those four wheeled monsters are going as the speed limit goes from 100kms to 70kms to 50kms pretty quickly!

Hopefully these urban impacts will not be a dream for too long as a serious source for funding has been identified and approached.

6. HUKA WESTERN BYPASS - we need you

It’s pretty boggy in there and so on Saturday 11 June at 9am we are having a Working B to load some pumice onto the track. Should take an hour max if we get a good turn out. Bring along your wheelie-barrow and/or a spade. Just like a chain gang !!! Fun Fun Fun

7. WEBSITE NEWS

  • Ever wanted to keep in touch with what our awesome track crew are up to?? We now have a new page on the website entitled just that TRACK CREW . Visit here to check out the latest maintenance and new projects. You’ll also be told the project contact in case you have a spare hour to volunteer your spade handling skills.
  • Use your login! That gives you more menu options on the left, like Meeting Minutes, a searchable Member list and the option to add items (Calendar, Weblinks) to the website, so you can let everyone know about your events. etc.

Newsletter 10

NEWSLETTER 10

A couple of weeks till Christmas and we are still getting snow!!! But the weather does not deter those dedicated riders and I see many people out there on our rural roads and off-road trails training hard out. Round the Lake has been and gone and with the inaugural mountain bike leg both roadies and mountain bikers are increasing their odos!

Remember, if anyone would like to add something to our newsletter that’s cycling related please email us with it .

1. CAN:

Most of you may not even have heard of the Cycling Advocates' Network NZ (CAN), but surely heard of Simon Kennett, one of its first ever paid employees. Simon and Fiona Whero are working to help consolidate and develop CAN's networks and local groups. This exciting project is part of the implementation of "Getting There", the national walking and cycling strategy. If you like to get more information on the fantastic work they are doing and show your support for Cycling Advocacy, please sign up to "Friends of CAN".

Even better, for just $20 per year you can become a Full Member of CAN and receive not only the e-Can, but also the printed "Chain Links" newsletter every 2 months. You can easily pay online to show your support.

Everyone signing up on one of the options above before 31 December will go into the draw to win a "CAN 'Biking for a Better World' t-shirt" or a "CAN 'One Less Car' backpack cover".

2. MOUNTAIN BIKE LEG IN GREAT LAKE CYCLE CHALLENGE!

What an innovative bunch the cycle challenge team is. On 25th November the inaugural mountain bike leg of the Great Lake Cycle Challenge was launched. Mountain bike riders did enjoy 80% single track riding from town (Spa Park) to the Sale Yards on Poihipi Road. Wow that’s around 22kms of adventure. They then taged their next rider who will have biked from town to the Sale Yards and the roadies took over to complete the cycle challenge. Part of your entry fee went towards the maintenance of Taupo’s awesome off-road trails.

3. ROADIES!!

The Fast Track: Taupo Cycling Club and Tri-sport Taupo have found a new exciting place to play. The Fast Track (new racing circuit on Broadlands Road). Tuesday night races are held for roadies and Tri-sport is currently holding their duathlons out there on Monday nights. Fast and furious is the word on the street. Resistance training with the wind is also a draw card!!?#!??#.

Train Safely: Just a timely reminder to all of you two-wheeled fanatics training on our district’s roads - be safe and be seen. Yep sure cars sometimes get a bit close even thogh we have our 1.5 metre signage up reminding car drivers of a safe passing width. But that’s all we can do - remind them (unless a dangerous incident is reported to the police). The important thing to remember is that if a car collides with a bike it’s the car that’s going to be better off. SO when training please please leave your egos at home and:

• Stay as far to the left of the road as possible;
• When riding two or more abreast on those narrow rural roads and cars are approaching - return to single breast.
• Wear bright and reflective clothing in any weather
• Make sure you are well off the road if you need to stop for any reason.

4. OFF-ROADIES!! -

Gullies Treasure Hunt Event - A great successful event was run on 19 October with approximately 100 people turning up to check out the latest gully track known as Waipahihi Gully. Three major spot prizes ($200 vouchers) sponsored by Top Gear, Avanti Plus Corner Shop and Life Cycles went out to three totally stoked participants. Imagine being 10 years old and getting a $200 voucher from a bike shop !!$#%??!!!**

Still Building ëEm: Tracks are still appearing at Wairakei Forest, Slalom being the latest and like its name its tight and goes down! The hard working ‘Bees’ are still building a new tracks and are concentrating on a few more challenging tracks Grades 4 and 5. That will keep the young guns working their brakes and sitting on their back wheels like the rest of us!
Other improvements include re-routing the Helistar Hill (from Huka Falls to Hub Café) and Huka Hill on the Rotary Ride has been regraded. Yes The Rotary Ride continues to get its regular face lift and we have now re-routed the track onto DoC land leased by the Gun Club. Not to worry though - the trigger happy chaps will be far far away from our piece of track paradise.

Promotion: Exciting news is the NZ Mountain Biker Magazine came to Taupo and interviewed a few people and rode our local tracks for around 6 hours! So have a look for the December edition for a great article of Taupo mountain biking and you might even catch a glimpse of a few local mug shots!!

Hub Café: Sussed out the new café - well it’s actually Helistar renamed to ‘Hub Café’ Still doing their awesome food and caffeine fixes. It’s also a proven great stop after a hard ride or even in contemplation of a blast through the forest. Loads of bikers are now using Hub Café as a pit stop. Our aim is to have more bikes parked out front than cars!! From observations of recent times it won’t be hard to achieve!!!

The Bike Fence: Heard of the Bra Fence? Well we are inventing the Bike Fence which will be erected at a location soon to be revealed. It will be on this fence that you can hang any unusable gear - a bit of a memento of loved gear that has either worn out or broken. For example bucked rims, worn out tyres, ripped cycle shirts (from those blackberry falls!), busted cycle shoes, holey cycle pants (hopefully washed one last time!). Who knows we might even get some famous pieces like Cathy Lynches broken chain!

Thursday Night Mystery Rides: THEY ARE BACK. Everyone raved about the Thursday Night Mystery Rides last summer and so the Mountain Bike Club is holding them again. The first one was last Thursday. Its pretty informal just turn up at Wairakei Car Park at 6pm and head off on a ride to be revealed on the night. Great way of having an enjoyable evening ride without having to think about where to ride!!

5. GROUNDEFFECT AND TE TOTARA GULLY

Our special friends of the South Island namely, Groundeffect Clothing, have yet again been a great support for Bike Taupo. They have provided funding for us to complete the Te Totara Gully track which commences the connection of the west side of Waikato River. You can now bike from Huka Falls to Prawn Park - yep no stairs anymore! And of course it’s a simple side track to Hub Café for some well needed refreshments because there’ll be some uphill work involved! Of course what goes up must come down. So remember it’s a two way track. Hooning is for single track!

6. SUBMISSIONS

Well everyone we were successful in convincing Council to reduce the speed limit of Huka Falls Road permanently. The change is to 80kms which will make it safer for bikers and pedestrians. You, the members, give Bike Taupo the stability and strength to advocate and win such debates. So thanks!! Just keep telling your friends to join if they haven’t - STRENGTH IN NUMBERS!!

7. KINLOCH TO WHAKAIPO BAY TRACK

We have now stood up and jumped up and down (and consequently we are feeling fit now!) In other words, we have made a huge leap forward in the progress stakes recently. The wheels are turning again! Don’t give up keep watching this space.
