Newsletter 1

Dear Member,

Wow, welcome to the inaugural
Bike Taupo Advocacy Group’s newsletterat last!
There has been a really good response to the inception of BTAG and so far our membership has soared above the 270 mark - a figure that is sure to grow and is sure to turn a few heads when we need support on future projects in our mission to help raise the awareness of cycling and cyclists in Taupo and beyond. So thank you for joining!

One reason for waiting so long before addressing the assembled masses was that we on the committee wanted to have some news worthy of CAPITAL LETTERS to bring you! And now we have it. As of last week, following a bit of to-ing and fro-ing between the organizations involved we have succeeded in securing all of the necessary bits of paper, number eight wire, shovels and permits that will allow cyclists of all abilities to ride to HUKA FALLS!

Yup, that’s right, after a couple of months spent in holding pattern, the all clear was given to allow construction to begin on building the ‘ROTARY RIDE’ - a classic trail of twisting switch-backs, gentle climbs and sweeping descents nestled in gullies of native bush and creeping alongside rambling pastureland. No longer will you have to feel guilty as you lift your bike over the ëDon’t Go There!’ sign on the existing Huka Falls trail because very soon you’ll be able to cruise the clear trails from the heart of the booming metropolis of Taupo Central to the pounding majesty of Huka Falls without stepping off your bike.

Thanks in particular must go to Taupo Moana Rotary Club and Patuiwi Reserve Trust, Landcorp Farming Ltd, Department Of Conservation and Taupo District Council who have donated funds and allowed their land to be used for the ultimate in slick off-road riding that will bring bike-shed loads of enjoyment for all the family.

Yes, that’s right; the ‘ROTARY RIDE’ will be constructed with the family of cyclists in mind - meaning that anyone who can pedal a treadle, or turn a crank will be able to enjoy the benefits of this magnificent trail. The expertise of a bunch of willing organizations such as Cheal Consultants, Tarrant Contracting, Murtagh Lymburn, Benchmark Building Supplies and Lake Hire will smooth the trail-building. And don’t worry if you feel you’re missing out! There’ll be plenty of opportunity to muck in and get your hands dirty in helping build Taupo’s premiere off-road cycle route.

Thanks must also go to numerous other sponsors and organizations that have made this dream become a reality, such as Alan Vane at Le Pine & Co Solicitors, Suncourt Motor Inn, Ground Effect Cycle Clothing and NZ Forest Managers.

Every little bit helps and it’s due to the support of all of these organizations and individuals who realize the benefits and enjoyment of cycling that will help promote Taupo as New Zealand’s premiere cycling destination and a leader in cycle awareness.

Watch this space for further developments on the ‘ROTARY RIDE’ and a few surprises in store...

Thanks for your membership.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

for the

Bike Taupo Advocacy Group

on

Wed 27 October 2004

at

Taupo Events Centre Clubrooms

7pm - 8pm

Dear Bike Taupo Supporter,

The time has come to unclip and dismount our trusty steeds and put finger to keyboard to let you in on the happenings of Bike Taupo over the last few months

As usual there has been non-stop action for all involved in all aspects of two wheeled, pedal powered locomotion.
Many of you may have enjoyed the thrills and spills of the recent Day-Nighter in Spa Park, an extraordinary event where over 3000 riders combined to create the world’s largest race of its kind. Over a third of this race took place on Bike Taupo’s flagship project, the Rotary Ride, and the trail held together extremely well considering the passage of over 10000 pairs of wheels!

Who knows what sort of races will be held once the trail from Acacia Bay to Kinloch is completed! Imagine over 20km of pristine bush-clad single track wending its way from the centre of Taupo town to the cafes of Kinloch
At present the plans and route are all in place to begin work on the first stage of this fantastic trail that will initially begin from Whakaipo Bay, meandering towards Kinloch over some of the most stunning countryside and vistas imaginable. This incredible project is waiting on complete funding before construction will begin so if any of you valued supporters out there have any wise ideas please get in contact with Bike Taupo.

The concession to allow legal mountain-biking in Wairakei Park (Craters of the Moon) is due to be completed this coming week after protracted negotiations. However, once this is in place it will ensure the rights of any cyclist to use the park legitimately. It also means that any organized event in the Park must be okayed by Bike Taupo to ensure that cyclist safety is maintained.

Other exciting news on the mountain biking front is that Bike Taupo have secured funding to employ a ëtrail-blazer’ one day a week for a period of time to maintain and create new trails in and around Craters of the Moon. Craig Donnelly from Free Ride Guide is the lucky guy who gets to charge around amongst the bush with the help of local PD workers keeping the trails safe and rideable for the rest of us.

Ever get lost out there amongst the hills? Very shortly you’ll be able to purchase a local trail guide from selected outlets for a gold coin or two that will last you forever. Bike Taupo, in conjunction with the local bike shops and some cafes, have put together a plasticized fold-up map that’ll survive being shoved in and out of your camel back and won’t fall to pieces in your sweaty back pocket!

Dear Bike Taupo Supporter,

Boy, it’s been a long time since we updated you on the goings-on of Bike Taupo - so much has been happening!

Rotary Ride to Arataitia

After a successful opening of the Rotary Ride at the end of last year, the dust has barely settled before we’re on to another project to keep those wheels rolling and cranks turning.

The feedback from the cycling community and community as a whole on the creation of such an awesome trail has lent impetus to our next projects, some of which have already been completed.

For those of you who have already biked to Huka Falls on the Rotary Ride, you can now bypass the crowds at the bridge and carry on through to link up with the trail to Aratiatia Dam - a beautiful meandering track amidst native bush and open pasture. Some swift digger work by Russ of Tarrant contracting has led to some friendlier inclines that mean this track is accessible to all levels of cyclist. If you are cruising this trail, just remember it is a shared DOC path so watch out for walkers!

Anyone who has had almost enough by the time they reach Huka Falls, or are in need of a serious caffeine boost to carry on, you can now ride to the front door of Huka Falls Café without putting a foot down (or it’s your shout!!). The friendly team up here will be glad to slake your thirst or hunger and you can thank them for supplying the signage for this part of the trail.

A BIG THANK YOU, once again to all the volunteers, who helped this morning and on many other occasions to make it all possible!

WairakeiPark

The team at Bike Taupo is still in negotiations with Wairakei Crown Forests over a concession to allow biker access to their precious forest. We are so close to obtaining it, just needing some i’s dotted and t’s crossed, however, without it anyone who cycles in the Craters of the Moon forest area will be deemed to be trespassing.
So keep your fingers crossed that this comes through shortly and once it does, look after the trails because they essentially belong to you, the cyclist. A concession will also allow Bike Taupo to complete a trail through those lovely redwoods that separate State Highway 1 from Huka Falls Road, allowing bikers to ride almost all of the way back to town without having to retrace their tire-tracks or use a road!

Road Safety

Speaking of roads, we can’t ignore the roadies amongst us! Those of you who get out on your road-bikes will be pleased to know that Transit NZ, who is in charge of all of the State Highways and non-council roads, has approached Bike Taupo to ask for suggestions and recommendations to improve roading for cyclists, particularly on Broadlands Road. We have also suggested widening Poihipi Road as this is also a commonly used training route with way too many close calls! If you’re ever stuck for where to go on a ride, check out the favourite ride section on the website and feel free to voice any opinions on the forum.

Bike Taupo has also put in a submission to Council as part of the Long Term District Plan to include all aspects of cycling, walking and alternative transport in any and all future roading plans as part of our mission to encourage a healthy and safe lifestyle for all members of the community.

AccaciaBay to Kinloch

On the topic of the future, you should check out Bike Taupo’s plans for building a trail from Acacia Bay to Kinloch! This totally achievable project looks set to begin with Stage 1 - Wakaipo Bay to Kinloch - early in 2005. It will produce a trail of more than 20 kilometres amongst native bush, beneath soaring cliffs and atop towering bluffs providing outstanding vistas rarely glimpsed before. This trail is going to be sublime and will rival any other trail in New Zealand!

We’ll keep you posted on the progress of this and all other projects, meanwhile for those amongst you who like a bit of hard yakka rewarded by the satisfaction of riding something you’ve created, register your interest for our working bees on the website. For those who prefer to assist in a more cerebral way, please don’t hesitate to make contact with the Committee.

How can you help?

One of the easiest ways to get involved with BikeTaupo is to help us increase our membership. As a community organisation for all Bikers we need as many people behind us in our efforts to lobby local and national authorities.
So forward this email to any of your friends, who you think should become a member of  BikeTaupo. It is easy, just log onto our website.

Talking about the website and help, there are a couple of new sections available, for those who like to help out occasionally with a shovel or spade: Here you can see a list of  pending track maintenance jobs. You can assign yourself to the task and email the track crews, if you are happy to help, or especially if you have already completed the whole job, whilst going for a ride.

A regular monthly working bee on the Craters of the Moon track is happening already. Meet on the first Saturday every month at 1pm at the Carpark (opposite Horse Hire).

Another feature to stay in touch with what is happening are our Mailing Lists. In that section you can ADD or REMOVE yourself from various email mailing lists. Don’t worry, we won’t send you unsolicited junk mail, but if you would like to be kept in the loop with activities and working bees on those topics, this one is for you.

For some of those features you have to be logged in to the website. Click here if you have lost your password or can’t remember it.
