1.       BIKE TAUPO HAS BEEN IN TOWN FOR AGES!

Yep that’s right we have finally made our mark in town with some awesome out of this world tracks through fantastic gullies filled with native flora and fauna. Te toki and Harvey Street gullies are rideable (and walkable). Kids get this great mountainbike experience in their own neighbourhood now (almost like when we were kids ??). The bike and foot traffic on them has been immeasurable (wow what a word). So if you haven’t checked these tracks out yet then take a detour for a cruise.
The best thing is Lizzy and Thomas along with other local individuals and businesses are holding The Gullies Treasure Hunt from 10am - 1pm on Saturday 14 October 2006. This will be a great family activity including a couple of cruisy bike rides through the gullies and huge festive fun on Waipahihi Sportsground. Look out for more on this.
Further in August there’s to be community planting exercise on the Arrowsmith Ave face (beginning of Gully track) to plant some of our glorious natives and re-generate the beauty of our land!! Big thanks to Colin Lunn and Chris Todd for making this gully track happen.

2.       ATTENTION ROAD BIKES!!

Green Paint: We have been chatting with Jess from Taupo District Council and she going to be making a bit of a mark in the CBD with the cycle lanes you might even see some green paint shortly - now don’t get excited - it means you’ll all have to start biking to work - the more we bike in town the more chance we get to make our CBD really cycle friendly. Actually we just need to take a look at petrol price increases and well really there’s no excuse for not riding to work on a lovely crisp sunny day and the days are getting longer and warmer. Our spies are reporting more people commuting to work in the mornings along the Lions Walk - KEEP IT UP !!

Eastern Arterial Route: Great news for Taupo and good on the community and council for changing Transit’s mind about fund allocation. We would have missed out! Council have already started planning for this great piece of tarmac and this includes allowing for a Recreational path the length of it - feeding into our gully systems and other routes into town. In fact Bike Taupo has attended the first planning meeting and you’ll be pleased to know we are working hand and hand with Council to ensure this Recreational Path will be user friendly for all modes of alternative transport ie. Biking, walking and even horse riding. Its getting closer!

Road Safety Campaign: Another year has passed with a successful campaign well it must have been successful - we are still all alive! - you will shortly be able to read our report on our website. Compared to last year we have had no negativity and if anything more acceptance. In fact Hastings are now looking at using our idea for their District. It looks like these signs will be popping up every cycle season!

3.       OFF-ROAD TRACKS - Where should the Worlds be??

Now that’s a good question! Though, some little birds have told me that the Open Day on the Worlds circuit was a blast over the weekend of the 22nd July. In fact rumour has that our infamous Pete Masters had to walk a couple of sections but maybe he was just saving his body for the big French tour he embarks upon at the end of the month!! Bon Voyage Pete and Ali - Jouir !!!

Wairakei Mountain Bike Park

Back to ‘hottest: mountain bike park in NZ - and I don’t mean the fact that its geothermal! I think I am the only one who hasn’t tried out the new ‘Outback’. Now apparently whenever you mention this name you’re supposed to get on your hands and knees and kiss the ground ! - It’s that great!!! What is great - we are back in the old block where mountainbiking in Taupo was born and the names Hansel and Gretel were not from a kid’s story-book. Plans for this area are to grow grow grow and its even featuring THE BIG RACE (more about that below!) Big thanks to all working B members and also "The Last of the Summer Wine Building Co" (the company directors being Banga and Dave) for all their work on this track todate. Jump online  www.biketaupo.org.nz and check out the pictures.

The Mountain Bike Club races have been a great success with the summer series hitting record participants! More and more people are testing the hot trails at Wairakei.

A new track called Te Totara Gully is progressing rather nicely - it provides for more fantastic biking experiences down river of the mighty falls and on the western side. Our friends up at Helistar have been kindly coptering in logs for us and making life a little easier for the construction of this track. Can’t say enough about friends in high places!

Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge

that’s THE BIG RACE. In fact it gets bigger every year with around 15% increase in participants last year. Wait for it there’s now a Fifth Leg of the Cycle Challenge in November. If you have already received your Cycle Challenge entry form then you’ll know all about it. Bike Taupo along with the Cycle Challenge organisers have created the FIFTH LEG of the Cycle Challenge which will be an awesome ride from Spa Park out to Wairakei - spitting you out at the Sale Yards in Poihipi Road where your team no. 2 will take off and continue round the lake! Fantastic - and the ‘wow’ doesn’t stop there because Bike Taupo gets a piece of the pie - yep we get to raise money from the entry fees of this section for much needed maintenance money in Wairakei Park. So if you have a buddy tucked away who just doesn’t do the road bike thing, they can now be involved in the Taupo Cycle Challenge on their knobbly treadly and on some the best off-road tracks around.

4.       WEBSITE HOTTIES:

Since our last newsletter we now have the Taupo Mountain Bike Club and Taupo Cycling Club on as links so you can click on them to gain your race results and latest happenings in the Clubs. Great to have you guys on board. Our family is coming together. By the way our membership is up to 1103 yippee! And as I check out this figure there are 14 guests online and sometimes there can be up to 50 especially when race results are out! This is great - now you just have to start logging on with your password and you’ll find out there are hidden areas of the website (i.e. Member List, Meeting Minutes) only members can view - WHY? Because you are all special Hit this link if you LOST YOUR PASSWORD??

5.       SUBMISSIONS

We continue to look out for all present and future cyclists. Our big appearance at a Council hearing re Speed Limits is coming up in August. Hopefully if we are winners we can get particularly Huka Falls Road speed limit reduced but we’ll see - its all about policy and guidelines and laws. Some good news is that Mapara Road will be reduced to 80km from Acacia Bay to just past the L’Arte Café.

We have been also commenting on some subdivision consents and looking at other funding avenues - oh the list goes on. Busy beavers!!!

6.       KINLOCH TO WHAKAIPO BAY TRACK

LATEST TRACK AND THE GREAT LAKE CYCLE CHALLENGE!

I bet there’s a ton of you out there commencing the annual training for the Cycle Challenge round Lake Taupo. Good on you all. It’s amazing how Spring fever hits us and encourages us out into the outdoors (unless you ride all year round!).

Last year the introduction of the new mountain bike first leg from Spa Park to the Sale Yards off Poihipi Road proved very popular and this year we will see the return of it. BUT an even better experience than last year - the mountain bike leg will start on the real start line in town and travel to the beginning of the control gates bridge and then veer right to travel along side the Mighty Waikato river up to the Bungy and out to Spa Park TOTALLY OFF ROAD.

Yes it’s our latest track you can now ride from town centre to Huka Falls and Wairakei Forest totally off-road. Very exciting!!!! So all you mountain-biking/road cycling people - get your teams together now and enter for this unique experience.

ROADIES!!

Urban Cycle Lanes

Sounds great doesn’t it!! Just to let you know we are still chipping away endeavouring to get our precious green paint on the roads and proposed cycle lanes made permanent and law enforceable. Policy is a harder to deal with than spading tracks in a peaceful forest setting!!!! Another thing - we hear all the time about the near misses in town and even accidents with the petrol variety of transport. This is inexcusable as motorists need to be more watchful - also you need to be highly visable in bright colours to be seen. If you do have a near miss/accident and its lawfully not your fault you need to report it to the police!! The only way we can get things changed around town is to have statistics. Once the Council sees numbers we have fuel!!!

The Fast Track

It’s still going strong. In fact its one of the busiest night spots you’ll find in Taupo on a Tuesday night!! Riders go back each week for AA (Adrenaline Action) on the fastest roadie off-road cycling track around. Great place for hooning, with no cars, and playing with many riders = good experience for all those road races this summer. Be there or be square Tuesday nights 6pm sharp.

Router Markers

Ever thought ‘I’ve got to go out for a 50km ride where do I go!’ Well hopefully we will solve that problem soon as we investigate some routes and mark them for your use. Example - 100km ride; 70 km ride; 50 km ride etc etc.

Always Train Safely

We cannot say this enough you all need to be safe and be seen on our district’s roads. This has been pulled out of the last newsletter because I cannot put in better words!!!! ‘Yep sure cars sometimes get a bit close even those we have our 1.5 metre signage up reminding car drivers of a safe passing width. But that’s all we can do - remind them (unless a dangerous incident is reported to the police). The important thing to remember is that if a car collides with a bike it’s the car that’s going to be better off. SO when training please please leave your egos at home and:

Stay as far to the left of the road as possible;

When riding two or more abreast on those narrow rural roads and cars are approaching - return to single breast.

Wear bright and reflective clothing in any weather

Make sure you are well off the road if you need to stop for any reason.’

Duathlons/Triathlons

Tri-Sport Taupo start their world famous in Taupo Duathlons on Monday 29th October and are weekly throughout summer. The first of the triathlons kick off 2nd December. Don’t you just love SUMMER!

OFF-ROADIES!! -

Wairakei Forest Tracks

We are always making small improvements around the place. We applied and Oxfam granted... money which was well used on the Tunnel Track from Hub Café under State Highway One. A couple of blind corners have been widened - titivation - our middle name. This track now has LOADS of traffic and we want the two-way etiquette to live on so still take it easy racing is for single track.

New Track - suspiciously called Lazy Sunday suspiciously because it’s a Grade 5 track! Remember to check out tracks of such calibre before taking on the jumps. Both Lazy Sunday and Coles Killer have chicken chutes if things are turning to custard! The Lazy Sunday recently bit a biker in a big way so take care out there! Ride to your level and if you want to step it up investigate first ?

New Track The Bungy Track - its awesome being able to now bike from Town Centre out to Huka Falls and beyond - a popular loop is becoming Town to Huka, Wairakei Forest etc and then back through Redwoods into town.

Other Tracks are in the planning stages for much action at Wairakei.

Some Statistics: We can proudly say that we estimate around 40,000 people visit Wairakei now for riding and around 15,000 per annum use the Rotary Ride for either biking, or on foot. Wow haven’t we come a long way. One member saw about 40 people in two hours one afternoon at Wairakei this week.

Promotion

CANZ (Cycling Advocates NZ) did a profile of Bike Taupo in a recent Endurance Magazine - looked awesome - If you didn’t buy the magazine and you want to check it out there’s a link on our website.

Maps for Sale

Did you know we produce our own maps??? We are selling them so fast we have to keep building new tracks just so we can add them to the latest batches. The greatest news is we have some wicked dedicated sponsors on board so we can always keep our off-road biking maps absolutely up-to-date. These great guys are: Fine Fettle; Zest; Replete; Licorice Café (Motuoapa); Hub Café (all cafés which make great coffee) and Pilates Body Dynamics - you all look after your bikes getting them tuned up, well Pilates is the place you get you body tuned up. A popular hangout for sports people who care for their bodies. (now for the Violins pleaseThanks all sponsors - you make it possible for us to be who we are.)

NZ CYCLING CONFERENCE - Napier November 07

This is the place where all concerned cycle advocates will be, as well as a mixture of local body persons like road engineers and planners. It’s a forum to hear opinions and facts on the past present and future of cycling in New Zealand. Some of our committee will be attending to bring the latest back to Taupo for implementation If you keen to attend or want to check it out follow this link http://can.org.nz/events/conf2007/

SUBMISSIONS

We are always submitting to future Taupo developments as advocates for cycling on your behalf. Here are some of the latest:

  • Annual Plan - April 07
  • WEKA (Kinloch to Taupo arterial) - July 07
  • Tapuaeharuru Bay Lakeshore Reserves Management Plan - September 07

NEWS OF THE CENTURY

You have heard of Y2K? Well roll over Y2K and make way for W2K code name for Whakaipo Bay to Kinloch.

It seems a long time ago that the first words were mentioned regarding building a track that runs from Whakaipo Bay to Kinloch Village for bikers, walkers and runners. Well we are now pleased to advise that after many, many months of waiting, liaison and patience, the proposed route has been given the big green GO.

The last official document is in our hands and we can now put away our pens and paper and pull out our digger and spades.

The Council has appointed Councillor Bernard as the district’s cycling champion. If you any cycling issues go to Bernard first and he will try and help or put you in touch with the right person. He is very approachable so give him a call. His contact details are phone: 07 378 7559 or email: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Wairakei Resort is one of the first hotels to be given the Bike Taupo “bike friendly accommodation” tick. They are keen to have more bikers stay at the hotel. They have got two nights accommodation for a group of six people including breakfast to give away.
Email them at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. with Wairakei resort in the title by 19th March and tell them why your group win. The hotel also has the Fairways Café. Call in there for a coffee on you next ride.

There has been a lot of talk lately about the council relocating to the domain in the centre. This is only one proposal in the Commercial Retail Industrial Structure Plan. There lots of initiatives in there to make Taupo more cycle friendly. It is worth reading and taking the time to make a submission. These can be done online. The plan can be downloaded from http://www.taupo.govt.nz/Projects/Commercial-and-Industrial-Structure-Plan/

Have you been annoyed about how much glass there has on the roads over summer? I certainly have. If you want it removed. Ring the council on 07-376-0899 or fill in one of the comment cards at the council building on Lake Terrace.

You don’t have to be very old to remember the joys of cycling to school with your mates, but a glance at most school bike racks shows it’s a dying practice. Wouldn’t to be great if all these racks were full again. Cycling to school teaches children to be independent and gets more oxygen to their brains. Teach your children good habits by biking with them. Remember, your children will copy the way they see you riding your bike.
  • Everyone must wear a cycle helmet.
  • Make sure the tires are pumped up and that the brakes are working.
  • Wearing bright clothing that improves visibility is a good idea.
If you want information on what resources and cycle skills course that are available contact Christine Hutchison, road safety coordinator at the Taupo District Council phone 07 376 0720
