W2K Headland Loop Opening

W2K Headland Loop Opening

The Final Loop

About 50 riders including some runners and walkers turned out for the final celebration on the W2K track. After some ceremonial rock rolling and tube cutting on the cut through, everyone proceeded to the the latest feature: A table on the highest and furthest point of the track, looking out over the lake to the mountains. The names of all the people, who made this dream become a reality are routered into the furniture. Check it out - the extra 10km are worth riding!

Tree Planting

Whakaipo Bay Community Planting Event

To celebrate World Environment Day  DoC is holding a tree planting event at Whakaipo Bay on Sunday 8 June starting at 10.30am.

We hope to plant around 2,500 native trees in what will be an ongoing project to restore four gullies at the popular reserve near Taupo.  The plantings, made possible with financial support from Taupo's Rotary clubs, the Tongariro Natural History Society and Environment Waikato, will help protect Lake Taupo's water quality as well as prevent erosion and enhance the area for future generations.

The event takes place rain or shine and will conclude with a barbecue at the Girl Guide camp. People are asked to bring a spade. For more details of this and other events contact Lianne Fraser 07 386 9263 or check out:   http://www.sustainability.govt.nz/wed  and www.doc.govt.nz.

New Zealand is hosting World Environment Day which is celebrated on June 5 and coincides with Arbor Day. The theme for World Environment Day 2008 is climate change with a focus on moving towards a low carbon economy and lifestyle.

"Kick the Habit" (the 'carbon' habit) is the international slogan for the event. The theme will also include the role of forest conservation and sustainable forestry in achieving domestic and global climate change goals.  A range of projects and events will be held around the country to promote sustainability.

Headland Track Opening

The Last Dig

All but 5 meters of the W2K Headland Track is built!

We haven’t lost our marbles, but the last bit is going to dug by hand on Sunday the 29th of March @12:00.

We want everybody plus dogs to turn up and enjoy the day. If you are biking or are going to walk in remember its at about 10kms from Kinloch and about 13 from Whakaipo Bay one way. It’s a BYO party and we will supply the spades and grubbers for digging.
It will not be one person cutting a ribbon everybody must take part in the digging

Talking about Kinloch, if you ride to the Cottage Café say you belong to Bike Taupo they will only charge $2.00 for a coffee (Cheap as chips!)
