Working Bee on the new Steamfield Track and Track News

The fairies have been out on the tracks.  The old and the young. (I can feel a song coming on!)

The old farts have pruned the trees in SH Fun so those with wider bars should be happy there will be no more sudden left turns.  And a younger fairy has done a great job on the Tank Stand downhill fixing up the entry into the gums and berm the corners improving the flow going down. The Mad Engineers have been plugging away at the hotel end of Steam fields. Remember the working bee this Sunday at 9.30am if you want to get out of the house and lend a hand. The first part of the Steam fields track is now open.  It still needs some imagination for the first 100 meters but we promise that will be de rooted and 100 % by mother’s day.

Thanks to those that just get out and do it - that’s what we are about

Reminder:

There will be a working bee this Sunday 11th of May at 9.30am to work on the new Steamfield track.
Meeting point start of Wairakei road which is 100m north of the BP Service Station @ Wairakei. Currently 3km completed let’s add to this.
The organiser is Eddie Edhouse

Steamfield Track Construction Powers Ahead

553974

A fine band of the BT ‘A’ team turned up last Sunday for a working bee on the new Steamfields Track. There was no need for a pre-working bee fitness assessment as anyone who could manage the 80 meter ascent through blackberry to the level of the new track was obviously up for the task. The group constructed 5-600 meters of new track traversing the northern face which overlooks the old Wairakei Power station road. This will be part of the new access to the park from Wairakei Resort via the 9 hole golf course area.

Currently there is a completed loop of about 3km of the Steamfields track which is accessed off Outback. Watch for the signs on the road where you would normally go left downhill and through the thermal mud area (about two thirds the way round Outback). The track meanders through some nice bush before returning to Outback above the scary narrow bridge over the road. It is officially grade 3 (some have said unofficially grade 3.8) and is great addition to the park which will only improve with time.

Thanks to all those who turned up and especially to Eddie for the organisation.553974

Craters MTB Park - Wairakei Forest
If you want some new single track and happy to carry you bike a wee way, then bomb down the rough track which goes off to the right at the mid way point on the Outback track at the thermal area. Take the left hand branch at the bottom and it will take you all the way back to Strettons Drop, its about 3 kms.
