 Dear [FIRSTNAME]

The Great Lake Trail

www.greatlaketrail.com

If you didn't already know, the Great Lake Trail is now complete and able to be ridden in full. The final leg of the Waihaha section was completed in March, wrapping up the last 30km of this 71km trail. Johnathan Kennett, the author of ‘The New Zealand Cycle Trails Nga Haerenga,’ and project manager for the New Zealand Cycle Trails completed a track assessment and said it is the best Grade 3 ride in New Zealand, so we are mighty proud.  This is a great asset to our region for locals, visitors and businesses. Built on free draining pumice, it can be enjoyed all year round with little or no mud - get  off the couch this winter! Think big blue skies, snowy capped mountains, expansive lake views and sweet flowing single tracks. Read Bay2Bays update on boat transfers that service the Great Lake Trail.

The Great Lake Trail now has its own facebook page so you can bike, hike, like and share.

Not content to sit back, Pete M and his team of crafty track builders are currently developing a campground near the Kotukutuku Landing. They saw an opportunity to offer a camping experience in the wilderness so start planning a night under the stars.

Tee Shirts & Hoodies

Be seen in a quality Bike Taupō or Great Lake Trail tee shirt. They're available online or at the local cycle shops - Pack and Pedal, Top Gear Cycles and the Cornershop. There's also a limited number of snuggly warm hoodies available only online.

Fonterra Road Safety Initiative

When: 17th May 1300 - 1500 hrs

Where: Reporoa Fonterra Dairy Factory

What: Fonterra are a very safety conscience company, and are proactive when it comes to safer roads and have invited the Taupo Cycling Community, along with the Rotorua Cycle Club to join in with them at their Factory at Reporoa

Why To build better understanding between road users, i.e. Tankers, Cyclists

What's Involved: They will set up on the private road a number of tankers, for people to ride beside,  along with rides in a tanker,  Sam (the manager) will provide some go-pro cameras,  to use both on bike, and in truck.

Along with the briefing that they give their drivers every day, there will be an open forum for both cyclists and drivers to talk.

Finished off with a BBQ supplied by Fonterra.

The idea is that this is a trial run, which then can go to other Fonterra sites,  and trucking firms.

What you do: We would like to extend an open invitation to anyone that wants to come along, you will get to see things from a truckers point of view, along with the opportuntiy to share your concerns or positive experiences.

Next: Email Carl now! and register your interest, (just for catering) to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or text 021741903. We will look at car pooling, more info will be on our Facebook page

Important Update from Bike Taupo

560799

BIKE TAUPŌ TO NOW CHARGE ANNUAL SUBS FOR MEMBERSHIP

As one of our valued members I am writing to you to inform you of some important changes at Bike Taupō.  As of January 1, 2014 all people wishing to become, or remain, a member of Bike Taupō will need to pay a membership fee.  This is a significant change for Bike Taupō as, for the last ten years, Bike Taupō has been free to join. Bike Taupō is a community organisation that survives on grants and donations.

The job of building and maintaining our 250 km track network is significant. The subscriptions program will give Bike Taupō a more dependable income stream to ensure that tracks can continue to be built and maintained. The membership fee will be used to fund the maintenance, and potential expansion of, the Craters Mountain Bike Park, Wairakei Forest and the wider trail system, including the Great Lake Trail and the upper Waikato River Trails. In addition the fee will assist in the funding of Bike Taupō’s very successful Kids Bike Taupō program.

The biggest change however, will be that all users of Craters Mountain Bike Park will need to be members and therfore pay a fee to enter. Currently everyone who uses the park should be Bike Taupō members as this is a condition of the permit that Bike Taupō holds to build and operate the trails. All members will be covered by Bike Taupō’s public liability insurance, which is a must when using a managed forest such Craters.

This is a move that Bike Taupō have not taken lightly or rushed into. It is a major change for both locals and visitors alike. Craters has had free to access for 10 years, but the charges will now mean more certainty for trail maintenance and development, as well as ensuring that the park is operated as per its permit.

If you would like more information you can view our ‘frequently asked questions’ as well as an associated media release at www.biketaupo.org.nz.

Bike Taupo News

560797

This is the first Bike Taupo newsletter for 2014. It includes notice of the AGM and news from Rowan Sapsford, Bike Taupo Chair:-

Hello and a belated happy new year from myself and the Bike Taupō committee to all new and existing members.

Firstly I would like to say a huge thank you to all of you who have become Bike Taupō members for the year 2014. We knew that the introduction of membership fees and the implications for access to Craters was going to be a huge change, but we were not prepared for the level of support and positive feedback that we received from you all. Currently we have close to 2000 members for the 2014 year.

Secondly I would like to invite you all to our AGM which will be held at 5:30pm on 26 February at the BNZ bank on Tongariro Street in Taupō. Please come and join us and hear a bit about how last year went and what is lined up for 2014 (plus refreshments!!!). We are also looking for a couple of people who are keen to join the Committee to replace Thea, Mike and Shorty who have stepped down this year. If you think that this could be you and you want to find out a bit more on what is involved, please do not hesitate in getting in contact with me.

On other fronts, I would also like to make mention of the following recent Bike Taupō highlights:

• Pete and Pete have just taped out the final part of the Great Lake Trail. This means that there is only 3km left to build to connect the Waihora Link to Kotukutuku Landing on the shores of Lake Taupō.

• With the exception of Buddha, Craters is pretty much back up to its pre storm state. Whilst it is missing a couple of trees, the tracks have been rebuilt, in some cases re-named, and are being well ridden. A huge thanks to Pete, Pete, Pete, Bruce and all of the other track builders who aren't named Pete who have been working hard over the last 18 months.

• Nearly 7,000 kids from all round the Taupō District took part in the Kids Bike Taupō programme in 2013. Thanks to Cath for being the heart and soul of our hugely successful programme.

• We have just hit 900 likes on our facebook page so not far to go till we hit 1000. If you have not liked us already go to www.facebook.com/biketaupo

• We have received a grant from Southern Trust that will allow us to open up the Steamfield Block that will be an extension to Craters MTB Park.

• And finally if you did not already know, the Walters, our resident Kārearea or NZ Falcon, fledged two healthy chicks before flying the nest in December last year. An extra special mention should go to Mr Walter who attempted to do a flyby/bombing run on every single rider who took part in the Huka Challenge last year.

Looking forward to building on these accomplishments in the year ahead so keep riding and we will hopefully see you at our AGM.
