October Track Crew News

It huffed and puffed and blew down the trees.

First they all fell over because it blew from the West then the Wind turned around and blew them down from the East. To all the people that texted and emailed about the fallen trees big thanks you are legends. It meant that the guys could get all the trees cleaned UP IN ONE DAY

To those that are interested with happenings on the Lake track we are in the process of talking to the private land owners this will take a period of time as we have quite a process to go through

Lots of maintenance going on W2K getting a re-bench on the Whakaipo Bay side and the weeds have started growing around Wairakei

Went for a ride the other day and got me thinking of the old days on the tracks around here. The Aratiatia loop was a road ride out to the dam then a hard core ride of blackberry and carrying bikes along Te Totara gully. Then a road ride back into town along the HukaFalls road. It’s good to have a think sometimes and remember where we have come from

And yes we need riders to help on the Huka We can do morning or afternoon shifts and we will be looking for some sweep riders so please email us if you can help out

Storm Damage Update

We had a great turnout today fixing up a lot of the storm damage. Lot's of people turned up, dusting off their chainsaws and got stuck into it. There were over 30 trees across several popular tracks - check out the photos and additional info on BikeTaupo.org.nz or the FaceBook Page.

If you are keen to volunteer some time over the next few weeks, please read the following important info:

Do not cut any trees anywhere, but especially on the Corkscrew and Squirt areas, because those are to be recovered by the forest mangers !
Contact the Bike Taupo Track Crew by email or Phone: Pete M. (027 497 7832 ) or Pete McF. (027 248 6427) before heading in and doing any track maintenance
Tracks definitely closed are: Rotary, Corkscrew, Squirt,
All other tracks are open, but you might come across some problems areas, if you do, email us.

Thanks

The Bike Taupo Track Crew

March 2011

Have to admit I’ve been slack no track crew news for a few months

Well it blew then it rained so that about summed up our track crew report for the last two months, what hadn’t got blown over got washed away

The boys got the Rotary Ride open in double quick time and added a new feature log tunnel at the same time. We still have one little job to do which is put in a new hand rail around the pumice bluffs. There’s now one hell tomo beside the track which we have fenced off at present Don’t fall in it
Rotary have been legends and helped us with funding the repairs and also have funded up grading the Eastern Bypass at Huka Falls This will mean a new alignment of the Rotary Ride end and the Eastern Bypass around the top of the buffs cutting out all the shared track bit and a new entry / exit point for the Rotary Ride right at Huka Falls
Work will be starting on the new track in the old paint ball area soon The Taupo MTB club found a few dollars to kick start the job and should go a fair way to getting the guts of the track formed. The Wairakei track committee have been in and marked it all out so it’s just a matter of doing it

Thanks to everybody who not only send in emails about the storm damage but also quite a few got off their backsides and grabbed a shovel and dealt to the smaller problems which was great. This meant we had most tracks open within a week

Cheers
Track Crew

April 2011

Trackcrew News - April 2011

Winter is in the air so life on the tracks is getting a bit quieter. We are looking for a few helpers to marshal the Moon ride in Rotoura on the 14th of May. Need a day and a night shift Day seems to get a bit more work fixing the tracks and night can be a bit quieter but both gets heaps of riding or talking, what ever turns your crank. You get your meals, flick you some petrol money and the money we receive goes towards track maintience

The new track is up and running in the old paint ball area nice easy flowing type of track to warm your legs up before heading further into the jungle I’m told some more tracks will be added in the future running off the main track
Kegresse has had a few corners opened out to make it flow better other wise things are just ticking along on the track scene
For those that are not aware the Te Totara Gully system is a Doc track and we are waiting for them to come and do the repairs after the last storm
The Day Nighter track has had some earth works alongside the track. The track is all good but remember it is private land so if you are riding around it please respect the land and the fact that the owners let the public use it abuse it and we will lose it

It’s the season for Wasps watch out and if you do see some along side tracks please give us a yell. Places to watch out for are the day Nighter track and W2K

Please keep sending in any tree reports etc they make a big difference

SeptemberTrack Crew News

The jig-saw is starting to come together

The lake track is about to start any day now just getting some jobs done around the place and waiting on the final paper work. Its going to take a few years to build but will be opened in sections so watch the web site for details

For those that have been crossing there legs Toilets for the car park are coming thanks to Shorty and the wise people at LINZ's great to have people who want to work with the community. I know this is boring to some riders but this is way overdue with the number of visitors we are getting to the track system.

The Rotary Ride bridge will be in soon Its been built and just getting painted at present before being flown into place

Thanks to the Mountain Bike club who found some dollars and have paid for a new realigment around the storm damaged area on Cork Screw. The same track fairies have also been running working bees fixing up Lunge and also rebuilding Squint around that same damaged area I think this was the last job after we got smashed by the storm

The Mad Engineers have been at it again and have got the first section of Junk & Disorderly open, Its pure single track heaven Just bike around to the scenic lookout from Kev's track (New exit) and follow your noise into the hole in the bush It will pop you out the other end heading for Helistar The aim is to have another link to Helistar without having to drop down to Huka Falls

Thanks to all those that helped Marshal the Day Nighter Have to say it was one of the quieter days Marshaling we have ever had. Just the odd person flying into the scrub Track was great but the dust was a pain in the ass

And lastly a big thank you to the Half Marathon committee for running the Off Road Half which helps fund the maintenance on W2K. With out your help it would be much harder to keep the track in the condition that we do. Hope to have the crew working on the Kinloch side next week giving it a birthday up to the bluffs
