Track Crew News - August 2009

Wairakei

Good progress is being made on the new track in Switch Back area thanks to all the people who turned up for the working bee the other day and all the regulars who are there every weekend chipping away. You know who you all are.

Walters Wiggles reroute is now wholed through, thanks to those people too.

James is getting closer to the bottom of Buzzard with the Coles extention. Worth a look to the more adventurous. If I can ride down there a lot of you others should be able to too.

The shelter in the car park will get finished when it has been signed off or approved. We got our hand spanked for being a bit eager and quick with that.

Everyone will have noticed the change at the top of Tank Stand with the trees gone. This is just about finished now but it caused a few problems at the last MTB race.

Other Tracks

Murray Fleming has built a new track off the Rotary Ride up near OD Park. Worth a look to check out this new loop. No signs yet [they are coming like summer only sooner]but easy enough to find.
On the way back to town on the RR turn left before you drop into the last downhill gully to the Hot Water stream bridge and continue up the gun club boundary. You will end up in a grass gully, ride down this then exit on the leftup to the playing fields then right and follow this along till you drop down another gully to the Hot Water stream bridge.
Just under 3km round trip from the bridge. This is the best direction to ride it in to.

Things are looking good for a start on the Kawakawa bay track over the next month. More as we find out.

Rotary have given us money for a new Van which Wings and Wheels supplied and is now sign written so keep an eye out for us. A big thank you.

Thanks to all for all the track info and feed back keep it coming - so This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if you see a problem when you are riding around.

Track Crew News - December 2009

BIG Thanks to the Marshals and Pre-Riders, who turned up at all hours of the day to help run the Huka. The race lived up to its billing as one single track after another and showed off the some of the great biking we have.

Fresh from the Skunk works is the latest work of art on Cole’s Killer: Coles it now goes all the way to the Connection. James has been ratting away in the bottom section. It needs more riding on the bottom so test your skills (or lack off...).
Down Hill race coming up on the 13 December check out the MTB club news.

Kawakawa Bay is still moving slowly along been to busy getting tracks ready for the Huka so just getting two or three day at most Doc boys have shifted the bridge, so its onto the new alignment no more stairs. We are half way up the first big steep climb around the 3 kms mark.

Logging is happening soon in the Day Nighter tracks next to the Rotary Ride so watch the web site for information. We are also told that Mays Maze will be logged after Xmas so we will lose Paint Ball , Fast Eddie , and the Maze in one hit I can already hear the boys getting out the spades and crubbers to create another master piece.

People are still digging away: Pete Manning has punched through on the first part of the new entry on Walters and Brendon took his family for a Sunday walk and make some new corners on the bottom of Young Pines.

Keep the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and TXT's (027 497 7832 or 027 248 6427) coming in for track damage - its great and is saving us heaps of time and money!

Merry Xmas from the track Crew!

TrackCrew News - October 2009

Suns out! well at least for two days now. We had a bit of damage from all the rain, odd tree down and a slip on the Tunnel track and Rotary Ride.

Thanks to the people who take the time and keep sending emails or give us a TXTabout problems. It’s making a huge difference in being able to get the problems repaired quickly

Lots of people hitting all the tracks, roads and commuting and we seem to have a lot of visitors here at the moment riding because of the mud in other areas. Remember to watch out for other riders and people walking on the tracks.

On all our tracks riders have the right of way but be nice and say Hi!

We are still banging away on Kawakawa Bay track been getting a bit of a soaking at times but a bonus is the track packs down fast We are up to the main steam crossing working our way out of the gully. This will bypass the stairs once we have shifted the bridge.

The Half marathon on W2K was a winner. Lots of people turned up to help marshal and 962 turned up to run and walk the track Thanks to all our helpers ad many thanks to the Half Marathon trust for putting on the event. The proceeds will help us maintain the track.

The Resort track is sign posted to the back of Wairakei Hotel just missing a few signs to lead you around the river. We are going to sign post the route around Aratiatia soon and also keep a bike track open all the way all year round. Its part of the Huka race route, and a nice easy ride around the lake and up the other side Wairakei Hotel are happy if you want the use the car park at the resort.

Other tracks have new signs up and other still to be changed.

The Contact boys are still chipping away at Kegresse and its flowing lot better now, most of it is middle chain rings ridding with just a couple of short steep climbs Its old school techy ridding like Mays Maze. You pop out on Outwards goods and can now take the new Return to Sender track back to the Tourist Trap.

James the Canadian is beavering (get it) away still on Cole’s Killer and adjusting the riding line every time he rips down the track. We will be changing the grading on Coles to a 6 soon as he wants to build a ramp the can be flown off. It will have a roll over for the meek and mild.

Brendon and Carwin are fine tuning Deb’s down hill and still building the uphill. Pete Manning is out of hospital and about to complete the Walters Wiggles make over and make the entry easer and more interesting going around the thermal area

Has anybody seen the Huka falls track sign ?????? Think it’s gone for a swim. And if any body sees some dipstick pulling signs out of the ground in Wairakei can you tell them to and ride some where else. We have better things to do that dig holes and put signs back in for the fun!

Track Crew News - November 2009

Lots going on with maintenance and the weather: trees falling down and slips appearing. The Tank Stand has a new alignment due to the latest storm and now has lots of timber to stop the short cutters for a few years.

The Huka Challenge will go up the Totara Gut then along the Resort track this year to bypass all the construction down at the Huka Jet landing, so if you are training for the race this will be the new route.

This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for the Huka race!
Need riders for all sorts of jobs from taking turns as tail end Charlie, to just ripping around and helping take down the course. We have a church group doing all the road crossings but will still require a few non riders so if you are in the race and your partner wants to cheer you on we will have a job for them.

We are still banging away on Kawakawa bay track just about at the bottom of the big climb getting lots of positive feedback from people using the track. The weather, maintenance and upcoming Huka race have slowed us down a bit.

Pete Manning is working away on a new entry for Walters Wiggles, easing out the hill, and then the aim is to take it around the little thermal area and rejoin the old track. The new side cut he has built is great riding and a neat way back to the Carpark.

James is still beavering away on the next section of Cole’s Killer. We are about to cross over the Buzzard and take it all the way down to the Connection. Coles now has a new structure on it and has been re-graded to a grade 6. You can still rip down on a hard tail by dodging the big jumps.

Track Crew News - March 2010

Thanks to the little people that come out at night and fix the tracks and JB for getting the paint can out on the new Tunnel track icon. Lots of people ferret away in their own time improving the tracks we all ride on don’t be shy and ask if you can lead a hand.

I got an ear full from some of the older users of the tracks the other day. If you come up behind some walkers please slow down and let it be known you are there before passing. Don’t take it for granted that they can hear you coming. We have always taken the stance that we are not that pea brained about sharing the tracks we build plus showing respect to other users will only lead to more tracks opening up to MTB around the area.

We expect the logging of the Paint Ball, Mays Maze area to start 1st or 2rd week of March

This means that the access point into the bottom of Q line road will be closed off You will still be able to park on the road side but will have to use Outwards goods as the access point. As some stage Ferret will also be closed when they drop the trees along side Q line road. Don’t be a dip stick and ride any where near the logging or go into closed areas as this puts everybody’s’ access to the forest at risk.

The Buzzard has got an interesting and testing section about half way down just to keep you on your toes so if you haven’t been down it for some time watch out other wise all the tracks seem in good nick.

Have got the new section of the Huka Lodge up hill open and will start picking away at the next bit as time allows. The Redwoods hill has had a birthday is much better to ride home now

New maps are out with an overlay of our concession area Ride only in the green areas please
