MANAGER’S REPORT:

Resolution to apply to Rotary Expresso for $500 and/or multiples thereof, for repair of Craters tracks.

1 The wind came and blew the house down

2 The boys did a fantastic job getting the tracks open again

3 Oxfam have helped out with $3000 for the track repairs

4 I have let THT's use part of the old tank Stand track to get up to the Craters road while the logging is going on This area will be logged soon so its no big deal we all have to help to get the forest open again

5 Have sort of a plan to rebuild TT, Tank Stand , Walters as soon as logging is finished to get part of the system back

6 Meet with Craters Trust about a Cycle path / walking track up the side of the road Said we are happy to do it but need some money to get it done

7 Meeting with the Bridle way lady about a route through the Park awaiting LINZ's now

8 GLT all good and have about 1.5 kms to go

Bridges are going in, now Toilets are getting priced all starting to fall into place and looking good

Getting Great feed back on the track, the way its build and the way we operate which is nice

Will talk about meeting with John Dun and Richard at the meeting

GREAT LAKE TRAIL:

John Dunn wants the building to be sped up and completed by December 2012. The contract says December 2013. Might be possible to transfer contract to DoC. GLT committee are handling it. Coming in under budget. Boys walked to the lake. Should meet Kawakawa Bay Track in a couple of weeks.

URBAN JUNGLE:

Cycle Active been at Waipahihi all week. Cath also had kids on bikes in Spa Park with the After School Programme. In the holidays she did two sessions with School’s Out kids in park by Waiariki Polytech.

WAIRAKEI: (7 wise men and 1 wise woman)

Wairakei Pre – logging meeting

11 April 2012 5.15pm @ Craters Car park

Present: Eddie Edhouse, Pete Masters, Kay Brake from GLCC, Carwyn May, Pete McFarlane, Shorty

Apologies: Brendon Reynolds Brent Cameron, Len Malcolm, Alex Fierro

Bridleway proposal

Pete Masters meet with Bev ( Freedom riders) and a after talking to a few of the crew has proposed for the horse people to use a section of Fast Eddies and build there own track ( trim trees) so they can get thru to easy up hill. This will keep the freedom riders away from the MTB tracks and most of the roads, esp. Craters, and away from Fernley’s tracks. If you like this proposal let Shorty know.

Looks like LINZ may grant them a month by month permit at this stage. Not confirmed.

Logging after storm damage - 20th March 2012

Logging to start on or about the 12 April 2012. Will take approx 3 months all up.

This is the plan so far things may change. Pete will keep everyone in the loop.

Area 1 Squirt, Corkscrew and a section west of Powerline road – will be clear felled - Skid site will be Cnr Q Line rd and Powerline rd so the MTB access up Q line Rd from SH1 will be closed.

Area 2 Tourist trap - Savage operation approx 1/3 of this area affected.

Area 3 Tank stand, Coaster, Walters wiggles – will be clear felled

Area 4 Bumble Bee and SH fun – Savage operation

There will be signage and flagging on all no go areas.

What tracks do we need back - priorities

Ideas from the group.

  • · Tourist trap, Inwards, Outwards, Piker, Return to sender. ( May extend TT)
  • · Tunnel and Lake Hire Link
  • · Tank stand
  • · Walters Wiggles
  • ·

Leave for now

  • · Bumble bee , Corkscrew and Squirt – they have easy access and could be good working bee tracks
  • · Coaster – Digger required to do it well

Options for the Huka

Ask LINZ for one off permission to use Q line rd and 60K hill

Extend Tank stand

Want to keep some hand made tracks eg Walter wiggles

Funding

Will need to work out how much track and costs and then where from?

Blue arrows

Eddie Edhouse has made some great blue arrows.Pete Masters has taken some of these and will mark a safe route to follow to get the tracks out the back.

MEDIA/PROMOTION/WEBSITE:

The logos brought back from Me Creative were well received. Asked Rowan to get a macron put on the Taupō.

LTCC money with Taupo Moana Rotary. Cath to talk to Mike Langley about it.

The Taupo Expresso $500 for Craters, see Manager’s Report.

KEITH CRATE REPORT:

1. Meeting with DGLT on Marketting Cycling (and Walking) with Rowan and Mark.

Progress slow but happening. New Autumn Launch is featuring our tracks and trails.

2. 1st National Cycling and Walking Conference. Snapshot report attached. My overview: we are way behind as a cycle-friendly town.(not as a district?)

SNAPSHOT REPORT ON FIRST CYCLING & WALKING CONFERENCE HASTINGS

FEBRUARY 22ND-24TH 2012

Attendance 196 delegates and 73 presenters.

Key Points from the presentations and keynote speakers.

General observation: The beneficiaries of the $7m Model Communities had much to showcase their expenditure.

  • · Collaboration produces results; breakdown silo thinking
  • · Inconsistency of C and W planning nationwide. Govt. need to play more important role
  • · Main benefit on C and W is health; obesity, heart conditions and dementia increase with sedentary living, many millions would be saved on health budget
  • · Many communities worldwide are Future proofing to reduce carbon emissions and promote self powered mobility.
  • · Investment in C and W is cost effective and reduces pollution
  • · Bike-ability is a key to visitor promotion.
  • · Christchurch rebuild has a focus on ‘Greening the Rubble’
  • · C and W is a quality of life
  • · For cycling comfort sits beside safety as a motivating factor
  • · Both C and W can become addictive
  • · Look at a 20 year plan to get people out of cars
  • · Any progressive measures to promote C and W will encounter resistance.
  • · C and W will increase when infrastructure is built and there is a separation
  • · 40% of traffic volume in Hamilton is to/from schools. Their vision is to have traffic volume the same all year round
  • · 50% of NZ vehicle movement is for distances less than 3km
  • · Panmure roundabout is a nightmare for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists
  • · Best C and W cities are Portland USA, Copenhagen, Bristol UK, All Holland and ??????

Key Note Speakers

NIGEL LATTA: Entertaining, language very colourful, only memorable PC reference, Risk taking is a life cycle!!

CELIA WADE-BROWN: Wellington’s first Green Mayor. W’ton Walking Capital of NZ. 26% now walk to work, they cater for every mode of Transport, 30kph in CBD, Lampton Quay busiest footpath in the nation 6719 every hour. CBD upgrade includes Golden Mile for C and W.

ROGER GELLER: Oregon, USA Cycling City. An hour of facts and images. 50% of population walk or cycle to work. He is the 17 year CHAMPION, Catch Phrase is ‘Build it and they will use’ In 10 years 20% of traffic increase but only1% of this is vehicles. Bikeways, BikeBoulevards, BikeCorrals, Bikeboxes, BikeParks etc etc.

PROF ALISTAIR WOODWARD: From AUT. Conducted research from LTCC to prove that injury highest with less cyclists, Separation is Paramount, Cycling is not dangerous, Air Quality kill 250 p.a. A 5% shift of motorists to bikes would save 9 lives a year, 10 times more people drown a year than die cycling. Was complimentary to LTCC for reducing accident rate by spreading start out over 3 hours.

3. Giant Bikes. Thanks to Rose, Taupo Moana Rotary, Taupo Sculpture Trust and TDC Bike being constructed and should be in place this winter. Funder for a Turangi similar Installation is being negotiated.

4. Waitahanui Track, Funding and consents in place for start in July. May only progress to 5 Mile Bay for starters…but it is a start.

5. Submissions for Long Term Plan open in April. We need to submit for improvements in Commuter Riding.

6. Meetings held with Mizuno Trust members on future events on Bike Trails from Kinloch. One objective is the funding for ongoing maintenance of our Tracks

7. Pending actions on BikeFest ; reminder this one of our past ‘projects’

Boardwalk over geothermal puddle, water diversion upgraded Done riding well.

Mr and Mrs – The bumps which are not roll overs - Please do not put in bumps if work crew do not know how they should be built.

Coles Killer – get top section working better and more user friendly. all agreed but would like a down hiller who rides the track to help with the upgrade – Action Alex will ask Bernie (Repco) to see if he is keen to help out if so, will get him to contact Pete Masters. A few of the boys have done a bit of work on this section more required.

Fast Eddie – Needs a tidy up and maybe re- routing at the top by Bumblebee. No rush on this.

Action Shorty: - Sign up @ carpark – What to help with the tracks. Done

Toilet s – New plans have been submitted to TDC one toilet needs to be handicap size and they are requesting a hand basin (no water so no point in having one). Cath and Shorty getting quotes and working on funding application.

Totara extension –. Application has been submitted. No word from LINZ yet.

Bridleway – Bev is to contact Pete Masters and go over roads they would like to access. Once this is done LINZ will make a discussion. Bev has not made contact as yet

MTB car park - 3 break ins over Christmas. What to do?

Action Shorty - see if the Police had any do not leave valuables in the car signs if they do put one up. Two signs up in Craters Carpark.

Meeting Minutes- 5 March 2012

Logging

NZ Forest Managers has informed Pete Mac that the following tracks may be logged within the next year. – Tank, Coaster, Walters, Squirt, Corkscrew and Budda.

Worth seeing if an access track can be retained to get to Outback, Grinder etc, while logging operation is happening.

Brendon proposed, relocating the trails and skills area to the kids track under powerlines by Craters carpark clear the blackberry and broom so parents can see this area from the car park, maybe a grass area as well.

Track Maintenance

"Alex proposed an adopt a track/maintenance crew idea, where someone(s) is/are responsible for certain tracks to ensure vegetation trimmed, track maintained (within current grading), no chain sawing or spraying" (eg Contact boys for Kegress)

"Alex proposed more thoughtful direction/better communication lines with the track crew to ensure continued care/maintenance of craters MTB trails. An updated list of what tracks they will be working on each month would be great, and what tracks they will not be addressing or where they need an extra hand".

In order of priority, tracks that need work,

1. Coaster and Lake Hire Link – Veg clearing and berms need a tidy up (digger at some stage but will depend on when area is logged)

2. Mr and Mrs –veg clearing and tidy up some corners.

3. Debs track - change grading, veg clearing and track tidy up - working bee MTB club will organise a date.

4. Young pines and Kegress – Veg clearing.

5. Reto – tidy up the top section where Peter Manning was working, only one option. – Wisemen will do.

General

Cost of Toilet and Tunnel information to Alex for the MTB club meeting.

Blue ride loop?

Many riders are following the long and short course tracks in Craters so it would be worth having a marked course which changes every couple of months, a great way to get tracks which are not ridden much and new tracks bedded in, also get new people around the park.

Action Ed to investigate any blue core flute.

Dunny race - to raise money for toilets at Craters or maintenance of tracks.

Project Tongariro $50k to make bush corridor from Golf Course

MEDIA/PROMOTION/WEBSITE:

A selection of proposed logos for BT was handed around. Decided that we would like to see some incorporating the chain logo from the GLT and would like to keep the orange and blue. Byline ‘Bike Taupō Ride Central’. Rowan to take it back to Me Creative.

FUNDING/PROJECTS:

Cath and Thea looking into funding for Cycle Active Taupo. Southern Trust said that they would need a plan with specific dates and numbers. Thea tackling a long term contract with a partner, say, 3 years.

NEWSLETTER:

GENERAL BUSINESS:

LTCC audit. Pete Masters went to meeting. It would have been better to have had the meeting back in December and better communication to everyone. It is prudent to realise that the trustees are all volunteers and doing the best they can. BT could learn from their mistakes and have a strategy meeting to plan where we are going.

DoC Building. Rowan presented a totally different plan for the proposed building with a community office for BT and Project Tongariro.

LTCC/Taupo Moana Rotary -  Cath sent application for $7k.  Cycle Active Bikes are at Taupō Events Centre now.

Job Descriptions – Mike has a list of things that could be handed to an admin person.  Committee to work through it and decide what works.  Will add it to AGM as constitution change.

DoC Contestable Fund - $10k annual payment from DoC.  Rowan, Mark and Thomas met with Mark Davies, Kim Turia, Terry Slee and Bryce Grantson.  $10k for the next 12 months for admin work.  8 hours per week.

KEITH CRATE REPORT:

No Report

MANAGER’S REPORT:

Rotary Ride is just about back to normal.  Just the final part of the downhill to finish.
Tourist Trap completed.
Logging is done, just the last logs being loaded out.
Walters being rebuilt as we speak.
Bruce is doing a great job getting things open again.
Only Tank Stand and Walters to finish.

Events
Half Marathon went well.  Thanks to the crew on the day.  Total of 530 people.
Day Nighter was great but would not be surprised if this is the last one, due to lots of things.

GREAT LAKE TRAIL:
3.8km from Waihaha.
Work is slow with a lot of blasting and it is bloody hard work in this weather for the boys day after day.
Bridge will go in in the next 3 weeks.
Access will still be difficult even with the bridge as it will be a while before we link back to the bridge.
Shelters, signs and toilets are all being built or designed right now, and will start going in over the next few months.
Have our first fulltime employee.  A young man from one of the crews.  It’s great to give him work and he loves it!

Track counters have already passed last years totals for W2K and KK
URBAN JUNGLE:
Cycling Summit last week amazing.  Well done Keith and Mark for putting it together.  Paul Astley from Bike On was especially inspiring.  He puts bikes and tracks into schools.  He made the comment that we have Ironman, LTCC and lots of events but are missing the ‘real’ people.
YOUTH CYCLE PROGRAMME:

Following from the Cycling Summit and meeting Paul Astley, Thea has arranged to meet with Sport Waikato, TDC and the MTB Club to form a plan to get more kids biking.

Cycling in Taupo Schools
Possible 3 prong approach as described below:
1.    Basic skills and safety lessons
Aim – to continue lessons within primary schools as currently being done by Sport Waikato
Involves – 4 X 45 minute lessons per school using gear owned by Bike Taupo
Responsible parties – Sport Waikato
Queries – a. which year level(s) does this programme target, does each child growing up in Taupo get the opportunity to participate?
b. Regular maintenance and storage of the gear needs to be scheduled
c. Is long term funding in place for this programme?
Next Step – ?
2.    Bikes in Schools
Aim – To provide primary schools in Taupo with cycling infrastructure which includes up to 3 tracks, set of bikes, storage area and helmet for each student
Involves – Utilising the Bike in Schools project template currently being implemented through Hawkes Bay, Whakatane and Auckland.
Responsible parties – Bike Taupo is keen to oversee development of at least the first pilot project in Taupo (Mt View?)
Queries - ?
Next Step – Presentation to potential funders including DHB, BNZ, Contact, MB Century, Higgins (who else?)
3.    Student interaction with Cycling Clubs
Aim – To get cycling clubs within the district to interact with youth through establishing training/skills clinics/adventure rides/taupo interschool champs/events. See Mtn Bike Club’s draft strategic plan.
Involves – each club to develop and implement their own strategic plan for youth development
Responsible parties - ?Sandy are you interested in coordinating with other clubs to help get them started?
Queries - ?
Next step – liase with other clubs, identify training/event dates for next year, communicate to schools

Other General Discussion Points for Meeting
-    Sue – main point of contact for schools? Are you happy to liaise with schools, esp for first point of contact in relation to above projects
-    Good to know exactly what we are planning to do for 2013, identify dates so that schools can put into their calendar

Update of logging.
Tank stand, Coaster and Walters wiggles: talked to Neil from NZFM, logging crews will be finished in 3-4 weeks with some logging truck movement still required after the crew have finished.
A detour still in place.

Tourist trap: Completed approx 6.2km has been GPSed
Ferret: open again
Bumblebee: is completed and a great extension by the Contact Energy mad engineers called the BBC( bumblebee contact) 2km

Peter Manning  - has been working on Retro
Funding for reconstruction of tracks @ Craters.
Donations boxes have been moved to Cafes around town. (more people with loose change)
Donation Box at Craters MTB carpark, needs to be vandal proof - Design has been drawn up and Eddie will build. Action: Shorty needs to check with LINZ and will need a copy of the design.

Shorty has GPSed and sent data to Ro for the TT, Bumblebee, BBC and Squirt.
Track descriptions and grades
Action: Len will update these and also the back ground info etc on this page.
Taupo ride planner
Route finder for bikers new to the area (similar to the Rotorua one) Action; Brendon and Carwyn will work together to work out some graded loops will be ready by October.
Next meeting  - October
Worth us looking  at an app for Craters  – maps and maybe ride planner.
Bike Taupo has asked if there is a long term plan for Craters approx 5 years. At present we have a yearly development plan. A long term plan would help us (BT, MT Club and Wairakei Committee) to plan $ required future development of track system, maintenance and maybe a storm damage fund and permission from LINZ. Put your thinking caps on - need some ideas and costs, then will put ideas past Bike Taupo Committee.
Debs Track – lets sort this one - just need to know what section of this track is grade 4 and then we have a vote.
Marshalls for Huka and info for newsletter.

MEDIA/PROMOTION/WEBSITE:
All agreed that the Cycling Summit was really worth it.  Other media covered under website and maps.
FUNDING/PROJECTS:
$7k received from Southern Trust for tunnel in Craters.
Thanks to MTB Club for a further $5k for track rebuilding and some of which will go towards the tunnel.
Waiting on Lion Foundation reply for toilets.
TDC/SUBMISSIONS:
Poihipi Road
Rowan spoke to Dennis Lewis from TDC and to the Cycling Club.  These teo have been working together and the feeling was that BT didn’t need to be a part of the discussions.  Rowan said that we wanted to be a part of things and for BT to be seen as the ‘Umbrella’ for all things cycling in the district.  $300,000 over the next 3 years with 50% funding from Transit.  According to Downers it costs $35m2 for seal.
Rowan thinks that the best way is to make submissions with road counts and to begin upgrading the worst parts.  Perhaps a presentation with cyclists/truckies/commuting traffic/kids to get across the point that this road is being used a lot more than it was in 1970 and that the traffic has changed significantly.

NEWSLETTER:
All information to Shorty please.

KEITH CRATE REPORT:

BRIEF COUNCIL REPORT ON CYCLING RELATED SUBMISSIONS AND DELIBERATIONS.

General,

Submissions and petitions were over 90% on rating issues. However our whole debt and expenditure situations were related to this. Savings were made in the millions on both Capital and Operational expenditure.

The issue of rating through Capital Valuation was resolved 6 to 3 in favour of the switch to CV.

Cycling,

· Community service grants were discussed and debated heatedly but by a narrow majority, BT’s $25 K is secure in the LTP along with $3k a year for 10 years for Schools Cycling Training.

· No change to the Transportation Budget but widening of Poihipi Rd.is still a priority but dependent on NZTA funding ( just heard of a Cycling accident as I write)

· DGLT’s budget again had heated debate but is secure so the Cycling marketing campaign can proceed this Autumn.

· Sculpture Trust’s budget was halved but our Giant Bikes are safe I understand.?

· The Yacht Club to Waitahanui track extension was agreed but only a minor amount of TDC funding for this to link up end of Lion’s Walk to the ‘Rabbit Paddock’. Hopefully this will proceed as agreed by DoC to 5 Mile Bay in the next couple of months; then follows negotiations with Maori owners.

· DGLT & Council are setting up a Cycling ‘ Industry’ forum so all cycle related activities can collaborate for future benefit.

Just so you know I voted against CV for rates assessment but obviously in favour of all cycling funding. There was no submission on the Bike Park but still on the Spa Park plan. Well done to track team on GLT completion, very well used already.

Good riding,

Keith.

Moved Thomas/2nd Cath

MANAGER’S REPORT:

  • · GLT Blessing @ Waihaha Friday 1st June – Started work that day, and now into the rock section before the bridge. – Hope to have plans for first bridge this week.
  • · Mike Henderson of Red Bull explosives has arranged for the two magazines to go to Seays Quarry Pohipi Road for us to use. Should have this sorted this week, early next so we can start blasting.
  • · Chad and Bruce will be out of KK bay this week.
  • · Turangi Red Hut track. Rob and Pete had 3 days in Turangi starting this track. This is a project Terry Slee is connected with through DOC.
  • · Wairakei. Logging in Cork Screw area is finished, still working in Tourist Trap and Bumble Bee.
  • · Started poisoning Pine trees on the RR the other day on the Huka Down hill.

GREAT LAKE TRAIL:

  • · Waihaha end has begun. There was a blessing ceremony. Hit rock already. Blasting needed.
  • · Whangamata car park needed and already resolved. Rowan visited the landowners for 1200m2. They said that they like the look of mountainbiking and if we got them two bikes, we could have the land for the car park! Rowan to organise. Land will be transferred to DoC. Suggested that the landowners be properly fitted with the bikes for them, rather than just go on best price.
  • · Rowan showed a design as a gateway for the GLT. It was a sprocket and lake silhouette, and the suggestion was made to maybe use the chain logo from the GLT. Rowan will take the idea back to Fraser Scott.
  • · Design ideas for maps and signs in the Dropbox.
  • · John Dunn’s emails are very erratic and contradictory.
  • · Pete McFarlane presented quotes for a simple barge/boat to be purchased for the building and maintenance of the GLT. There is a $90,000 budget from Nga Haerenga. It was discussed that a single motor would be more economical to maintain. Rowan moved that we accept the Mark Skelton quote for $89,875.00 for Skelton Craft with 1 x Yamaha F150 4 stroke motor. 2nd by Mark. All in favour.
  • · Boat building contract required from Mark Skelton, with time frames etc.

URBAN JUNGLE:

Education Programme Report from Thea

- 3K per year for next 10 years obtained from TDC.

Following discussion/decisions required

1. Objective of programme - To establish an on-going cycle education course in the Taupo District to increase number of residents using bikes as a mode of transportation and form of recreational activity.
Keep the name the same for now - Cycle Taupo Active?

2. Possible courses to be run:
a. School programme
b. Holiday programme
c. Parent Child adventure experience
(lots of future projects to be completed later in conjunction with this programme like tracks at lower decile schools, bike trains to and from school...)

3. Need to get valuation of gear
Do we use Nick, Corner shop dude, anyone else to consider..?
Purchase gear.

4. Ownership entity
Agree that for now Cycle Active Taupo will run as a subcommittee under BIke Taupo.
Double check this decision with Alan Vane as tax liability and risk assessment issues are need to be considered.

5. Once above decisions are made, meet with Claire and Christine from TDC.

6. Develop a budget for 2012 and seek funding.
Grants short term, but approach companies for 10 year funding to compliment TDC funding.

WAIRAKEI: (7 wise men and 1 wise woman)

Wairakei Sub -committee update.

Craters tracks

Logging bumblebee and Tourist trap area at present. Bikers have been pretty good at keeping out of the logging areas.

Then move to Walters wiggles and tank stand area – will need another route to get out to back tracks possibly

Q line and into Mr and Mrs is an option.

Working bee - top section of Debs track.

Gary Patterson has offered 2-3 days of free digger time - looking at getting him to work on Squirt.

Toilet

We have Building consent and three quotes next stage is sourcing funding – Cath and Shorty to do.

Bridleway

Bev has withdrawn the bridleway proposal as no back up support and finance for permit process. ( Pete is happy to keep working with them if the situation changes.)

Signage

From old SH 5 and at the Carters MTB park car park ( November the road changes to council, less restrictions hopefully)

Marshals - funding for maintenance

Talked to Murray Fleming he will get back to me next week with days and numbers for the Tough guy and girl events in Rotorua in August and I will organise marshals and radios while Pete is away.

Wairakei Tourist Park

Webpage and new logo see- http://www.wairakeitouristpark.co.nz/

Parties involved in the Wairakei Tourist Park:

Marketing proposal:
The WTP is marketed as a tourist park, containing many different attractions, for visitors to the Taupo region. The objective is to ensure visitors are aware of the park and spend time and money in the park with as many operators as possible. They are rewarded with memorable experiences they will pass on to others.

I attend these meeting as the Bike Taupo rep.

MEDIA/PROMOTION/WEBSITE:

Covered in Keith’s report and in website discussion in Matters Arising

FUNDING/PROJECTS:

  • · LTCC money with Taupo Moana Rotary. Cath to follow up application.
  • · Shorty and Cath to attend all day Funding Workshop at GLC on Tuesday 19 June.
  • · Cath and Shorty to do Craters toilet funding after workshop. New Resolution to apply for the funding. Moved Cath. 2nd Shorty

NEWSLETTER:

GENERAL BUSINESS:

Waitahanui Track – Rose Blackley has been lobbying to get the track to Waitahanui done. There is a small piece of land that has many owners. Rowan and Shorty to explore options. Maybe the track could go around the land to the road reserve. This land was the centre of some protests and BT is not keen to cause any further drama.

CONFIRMATION OF PREVIOUS MINUTES:  Cath/Mike

MATTERS ARISING:

  • Website – Committee not happy with the website.  Layout messy and hard to follow.  Need 2 maps and website for Cycling Summit on 20 Sep 2012. Mark and Thomas to talk to Mike ASAP and check if this is possible.  If not, they have the mandate to approach Me Creative and/or Kim Mananui for quote and then the go ahead to do.               Moved Rowan/2nd Cath
  • Maps – Iwi have given go ahead for GLT map.  Double sided A3 with map on one side and ads on other.  GL Shuttles ad to be free on first run.
  • Craters map needs more definition on background.  Suggested to add arrows for way track is ridden on the numbers.  Email any comments to Rowan.  First print run needs to happen and it’s easy enough to alter in following runs.
  • Toilets – Paperwork sent to Lion Foundation.
  • Tunnel – Funding application posted to Southern Trust
  • DoC $5k – Letter was sent, but no one at DoC seems to know about it.  Rowan thinks that it may have been a budget excess.  No further action.
  • LTCC/Taupo Moana Rotary -  Cath sent application for $7k.  Cycle Active Bikes are at Taupō Events Centre now.
  • Job Descriptions – Mike spoke to Kay Brake from LTCC, which has a similar set up with paid administrator.  Mike to sit down with Thea and Cath to put something together to bring to next meeting.  Thomas contacted Alan Vane and there seems to be no problem giving volunteer tasks to a paid position.  Will add it to AGM as constitution change.
  • DoC Contestable Fund - $10k annual payment from DoC.  Karyn to follow up.  Rowan will contact Dave Lumley.
  • Donation Boxes – Working well.  Suggested that it could be worth putting them in the cafes, especially Tipsy Trout as riders stop there straight off the tracks.
  • Maps to Heli Sika - Done

KEITH CRATE REPORT:
Keith to email so can be added

MANAGER’S REPORT:
Rotary Ride uphill now open, but it’s two way.
GREAT LAKE TRAIL:
2nd crew starting using $50k operating budget. New digger needs running in.  Buying 2 x power barrows and a small car to transport everyone.  $5nd a small car to transport everyone.  $5k WINZk WINZ funding to employ young person.  Forest Managers have suggested that they do all the PAYE etc and invoice BT.  Bridge being set at Waihaha.  2.8km in more-or-less.  To visit go down Waihaha road at lake end to end of grass as it becomes bush.  Jump over fence to right, by the beehives.  As there is blasting, let the guys know you are coming.  The track crew are working long, cold, hard days.  It is very hard work.
Looking into toilets at Whangamata Road.  New one for Kawakawa Bay.  There will be large signs at road entry areas of trail.  Perhaps a wash down area at Kinloch.  Gateways will be bach style for Kinloch and red bard at Whangamata.
When DoC holds events, BT needs to be involved.
Alan Vane going to Wellington to learn about the new umbrella organisation for National Cycleways.  Cycle Trail Creative Workshop.
URBAN JUNGLE:
Sport Waikato borrowing TDC bikes and Cycle Active (soon to be Bike Taupō) bikes for a Kiwi Sport programme at Waitahanui School for 4 weeks.  Sport Waikato and the schools love that we have bikes they can use.  The programme would not run without them because the schools/families don’t have good bikes or helmets.  Cath has asked for feedback to give TDC and funders from Sport Waikato.
Thea has approached all the primary school principals, and the reaction is very lukewarm.  Schools are busy and cash strapped, unless it’s free and doesn’t require any input from them, most schools are difficult to approach.  Holiday programmes and after school might be a better way to use the bikes.
MTB Level One Coaching being run in Rotorua through Bike NZ 22 and 23 September.  Cath expressed interest in going, and Thea and Julie would like to as well.  BT possibly pay cost and petrol.
BNZ has approached Alan Vane about funding some BT activities.  Perhaps this would work well with the kids?  Contact Energy, Craig Griffin, has also expressed that they want to help.  A good trailer would be useful and if it was designed well, could be used for many BT things.
Friday November 23 @ 4pm in Horomatangi Street for Bikefest kids course.  Any volunteers to help would be gratefully received.
In regards to 2013 youth programmes -
1. have draft sale and purchase agreement which I will bring to next meeting for approval
2. have spoken with couple of dps/teachers within primary schools and now have pretty good understanding as to why very low response rate from principals in regards to future schools programme. Basically - word on the street is that schools in general not very happy with how Peter's programme- mainly to do with the organisational side of things. Therefore we really need to distinguish ourselves from the old Cycle Active Taupo.
3. as I have said I really want to be well planned for 2013 and know exactly how we will fit into schools/holiday programmes before the year starts.  Am working on 3 different avenues based on my discussions with schools-
a. cycle training/road safety for lower decile
b. skill taster sessions (mtn and/or road cycling) for schools
c. holiday programmes.

Will advise on progress by next meeting.

Regards. Thea
