Track Crew News - June 2009

Wairakei

The new start to the Outback is now finished with the new crossings on the Lane way and a road crossing near the pipe gate to get back onto the established part of Outback.

The logging of Switch Back area is now finished and Brendon and Carwyn have set out a new downhill and uphill to go from the top of Grinder down to the bottom of the old Switch Back then back up to the Mr & Mrs entry at top of Buzzard.
There will also be an exit at the bottom of 60k hill.

We had a working bee on this track on Sun 21st and thanks to all who turned up. Good progress was made.

Pete Manning is working on a change on Walters Wiggles to take out the twists and turns down on the flat. Thanks also to the people that turned out to help him.

James is still beavering away on the Coles Killer extention.

Have been doing a few minor maintenance jobs on the Mr & Mrs, filling in a few braking bumps and smoothing out some of the berms.

Everyone will be noticing the progress on the Golf Course predator fence.

Other Tracks

Not much else is happening on the other tracks.Got 8 rats in the traps on W2K the other day.  Thanks to Contact [Tim] and TDC [Darren] for the posts, timber and other materials they have let us have just recently.

Track Crew News - May 2009

W2K

We have now put W2K to bed and any future work is now maintenance, as we are not on the track so much can people let us know, if any trees are down or any slips happened.
We have trouble getting around all the tracks nowadays (we are not to old - just too many tracks !) and it saves us a lot of time if we know what gear we need.

Wairakei

We are working on the new Outback track at the moment which is going to have two new bridges over Slalom and go up and around the big rock in the Young Pines. Plus Pete Manning has just about completed building the new single track along the top road, all of these changes have made a big difference to the Outback track as it now much more interesting to ride and its longer as well.

The bridge has been ripped out of the Drone as part of the new alignments so be carefully on a night ride.

The Contact boys are still working away on the new track going from Bumble Bee to Outwards Goods and further its getting closer by the day and when finished is going to be about 3 kms long so watch the web site for more details.

Down hillers are ripping down The Buddha plus have got together and open up Coles Killer again which is great to see.

The logging crew have just about finished in the old Switch Back area. The hill has been logged and they are clearing it for planting at the moment.
That’s the next track to be build as soon as the logging is  finished.

Track Crew News - September 2009

Lots going on, with three new tracks holing through in the last few weeks.

The old Switch Backs hill has a new down hill called Deb’s track (Grade 3) and includes an up hill single track to the bottom of 60 Km hill. Its still soft but will pack down with more riders checking it out. A new single track returning to the top of the Grinder is in the pipeline.

While you are in the area rip back up 60 Km hill then down Coles Killer which now joins onto the Buzzard just before Missing Link which means you get one big long down hill to the Connection. It’s a Grade 5 so take it easy on the first run down.

The new traverse track in Walters Wiggles is open all the way as well. We don’t want the old track open as it’s the way the horse’s get onto the tracks. So whoever is shifting the branches we are putting across the track can you please leave them.

The Contact boys have been chipping away at the new Kegresse track to make it flow better. The track winds and wriggles its way from the end of Bubble Bee to Outwards Goods, in and out of some very narrow gullies it’s about 2.7 kms long. It’s a grade 4 track and pretty techy.

Each of these tracks have been build with one or two guys on each track working away by themselves in weekends and after work. This is an amassing amount of work when you think it’s all been done over the last 12 mouths. So when you are ripping around up and down tracks think of those guys, with out them you would be riding on gravel roads.

With the help of Wairakei Resort we have been able to upgrade the track that runs alongside the road past the Honey center taking out the killer hill and blackberry. Signage is still to come but It will lead into the back of the Hotel and then around the back beside the hot water stream. It will allow people to ride from the Hotel off road and for those that know the route to go off road all the way around Aratiatia. The track will be named The Hotel Track and will starting at the intersection on the tunnel track.

With DoC we have started upgrading the Kawakawa Bay track. The grades will be more like W2K so the whole track is able to be ridden but at the same time we are hoping we can retain the character of the track going through the rock areas and the stream crossings.

Big thanks to the people who came and helped Marshal the Tough Guy in Rotoura and also to those who are helping with the half marathon, then also put their hands up to help on the Day Nighter. All the funds we receive from Marshaling go into track maintenance and without it we would not be able to build the new tracks and keep up with the weeds.

Track Crew News - April 2009

Wairakei Update

Lots going on with new tracks opening, and old tracks passing into history. Thanks to all for staying away from the logging area. We have only one report of some tourists riding into the block to watch the trees falling down - They got told where to go.

Track changes coming up are that we are going to loose the Drone up to the old gate. This is going to be fenced off and go into the new golf course bird sanctuary. It’s a pain to loose this area but we are fully in support of the sanctuary as the bird life will make the forest even better to ride around in.

We are going to build a new Outback entry track this will include two new crossings on the Laneway road. As part of the deal in loosing the area we are getting some money to help with the new track and also getting a big increase in the concession area to the north of the Outback block so watch this space.
The Outback single track is coming along  slowly but the end is in sight.

W2K

The Headland track seems to be winner and is getting lots of traffic. For those not in the know it’s 27 Kms from Whakaipo bay around the Headland and back to the bay. And its 22 Kms from Kinloch

All the track gear is on its way out we are gong to fix up the short cutting above Kinloch and then digger will be attacking a few overdue jobs.

HELP!

If you are not riding in The Moon Ride (8th May) and can give us a hand marshaling This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Need a day and night shift, you get your meals and some money for petrol plus you can ride as much as you like on different tracks. The money all goes into maintenance of our tracks so it like a working bee without the blackberries.

Eucalyptus Logging

PF Olsen is planning to begin harvesting of several Eucalyptus stands in the Wairakei Forest - NW of Taupo.  We understand your club is the main contact for the mountain bikers using this area recreationally.  The operation will begin over the next week or so and is expected to be completed early October.

The area we will be operating in is the most NW end of the forest - nearest Poihipi Rd.  We would appreciate recreational use of the following forest roads and surrounding area restricted temporarily to weekend use only for obvious health and safety reasons.  Signage will be in place to notify public however it would be great if you are also able to notify mountain bikers.

  • Farm Rd
  • Reservoir Rd
  • Rogue Rd
  • Eucalyptus Rd
  • Karapiti Rd (top section nearest Poihipi Rd)

Feel free to contact me with any queries.

Regards
Josh Penn
