Track Crew News - October 2008

For those who want a change of scenery bike around the Aratiatia dam by using the track that goes down the western side of the lake.  We have built a track to get you off the highway which goes into the gum trees just after the Wairakei Steam Bridge and pops out at the Contact site lookout. "Contact" has been very helpful in allowing us to use this piece of land.

You then free wheel down the hill, go straight ahead climbing over or under the gates and stay on the 4X4 track which will lead you  around to the dam. Then it’s back up the Aratiatia track to Huka falls If you have gone from the Hub café it a little over 20Kms that’s via Totara Gully back up the hill and going around the hotel via the car park.

For  shape people who have seen the new bit of track at the top of the Huka Lodge down hill we will open it soon we are just trying to get the rain to pack it down a bit at the moment. The idea is to take out the top RH corner that causes a few problems for the newer riders when the corner cuts out in the summer.

We have also re-laid the matting in places on the Rotary Ride it make it easier to ride for new comers

We are going back into W2K next week to carry on with the headland track. At this stage we have funding for a further 3 or 4 Kms but have a short fall in funding off $25,000. This is because we misjudged extra distance that we did on stage one going in and out of gullies. We have done a walk around in the last few weeks and we can say that the best is yet to come so watch this space and start riding up the head land track

W2K seems to be getting plenty of traffic on nice weekends remember its two way. Thanks to Tom Sawyer and the Single Speed boys for clearing of the branches and sticks of the track this is a big saving to us.

Carwins track in the Paintball area is growing slowly and has packed down in the last mouth and is worth checking out. Other tracks worth checking out are Better than P and The Young Pines both are fast and smooth at the moment.

The down hill boys are working on the new down hill track at the moment the digger work has been done and it now requires lots of racking to get it finished see Nigel at Top Gear to help

The top of Cork Screw also got realigned so it all flows a bit better. The old entry is still up the road for those than can’t get up the Cork Screw

Thanks to the Marshals who helped on the Day Nighter and all the friendly locals saying Hi! Made for a great day out on the treadlie

Track of the mouth The Buzzard to bottom its smooth fast and still eats you if you get it wrong

Cheers

Track Crew News - August 2008

The new track has a name: "Mr. & Mrs." It seems to be a big hit, plus its keeping people fitter riding up the Ground Effect Girder to ride it. We have none some major changes on the Tank Stand we hope this will enable it to better handle the traffic that it gets over the summer.

We haven’t lost our marbles by putting in a bridge at the Corner Shop Connection and changing Slalom and Young Pines exits, we have done this to stop the cross over’s happing in races. It takes 3 marshals to look after that one point and we still have riders going the wrong way. If it still happens in the future it will be the riders fault.

We are going to put another bridge in the Drone and change the entry to Outback so we are able to put the Drone into future races as well, at the same time the exits from the Drone and Dipper will be changed so you will get a blast down a gully at the end

We are getting to the Coaster and will give that a birthday in the next week, plus we are heading back to Taylor’s Bluff to widen the track again.

A last request: Can people please email, phone or even send a carrier pigeon and tell us were trees are down, we are looking after 75 Kms of tracks now and we can’t ride all the tracks ourselves every week and by knowing were they are saves us a lot of time. Track-Crew Contacts here.

Cheers

Track Crew News - September 2008

"Mr. & Mrs." seems to be a hit and people are getting fitter by having to ride the Ground effect Grinder more often. The new changes to the exits of Young Pines and Slalom are for the future races just duck when you go under the Slalom Bridge.

The new alignments mean we don’t have to have the drafting gates anymore when the fast guys lap the tail enders.

The Drone also had a birthday so it will flow better within the track system. Outback now has its own entry track, if you bike around the Drone, you go up the old entry track over the bridge and around the loop. When leaving the Drone or Dipper go under the bridge take a stage left and dive down the new track built in the gut. Outback is now straight ahead after the bridge, or for a hoot go down the gut the up the new Outback track.

A lot of the realignment work and new tracks are for the Huka race and future Mtb club races in the future and has been funded by Rotary

Both Tank Stand and the Coaster have had a lot of maintenance work done on them to both get the water off better and take out the rutting. Please take it easy on the braking going down Tank Stand.

We have also opened up a new Entry/Exit track on the Redwoods. This leads up onto SH1 and then bike along the grass to the top of the control gates hill

Hope to fix this week the free bike wash which has been in the Lake Hire Link Tunnel for the last two mouths, had a bit of customer resistance to this new feature.

We have also cleared off the trees on the Waikato River tracks for those noising around in Spa Park, in fact those tracks are in great order so check them out

Carwin has been digging away doing a realignment on the Paintball track so check it out. Just ride in Paintball the normal way up the tree root hill,  hang a left some where along that track and you will see the entry,  it needs riding to compact it so check it out its all hand built single track

To all those people that have turned out to Working Bees and helped Marshaling  in the last year a big thank you because with out your help we could not have anywhere near the amount of maintience work done. We hope you most of all enjoy blasting down the Tank Stand and Coaster after all the recent work

Kawakawa Bay Track

Kawakawa Bay Track

We have been given approval to up grade the Kinloch to Kawakawa Bay track to the same standard as W2K.

The idea is that you will be able to easily bike over to the Bay for a swim.

At present the track has some very hard climbs and tricky single track and although some riders will say it should stay the same , but only very few riders can ride the track and enjoy the experience.

We will try our hardest to keep the track character the same, but ease out the hills and widen the track for more traffic
