Hi and Happy New Year!

Great to see lots of bikers out and about.

Looking at the tracks they have been getting hammered, (Rotary Ride has had a lot of riders on it) and without the rain they have cut out in places.
We have been hard pushed at time’s to keep up with the blackberry growth but have just about got it under control again.

Hope people are enjoying the odd change we have done, the end of the Rotary Ride is much better now, and the work on the Tourist Trap seems to be getting a thumps up from the locals.

The board walks on The Buzzard has been the undoing of the odd rider, endo from the middle is the best we have heard off, and a few others have been helping with the maintenance by crushing the blackberries at the bottom of the first one. They are a lot faster than the pumice so go onto to them slower.
We had to put them in to fix problem areas, but at the same time we don’t want to dumb the track down. Buzzard is a grade 4 track please don’t treat it lightly.

Coles Killer is closed at the moment due to thinned trees all over it. We will sort it out over the nest few months.

W2K is up to 2.5 Kms from the Whakaipo Bay end. Great views and a nice ride under the native bush check it out:
Go to the end of the bay look for the new style (Many thanks to John the farmer for building such a bike friendly one), follow the new track under the big Poplar trees and head up the paddock for 150 meters - you will see our signs - jump the fence (cattle stop coming ) and then hit the track.
We need you to ride it to pack it down, so more the better, plus it’s a good training hill at the moment. We may need a working bee in a few weeks when we get out by the bluffs, but will let people know by email.

The other news is we have put in a See Saw and plank ride (see photos below) on a little track of Cork Screw. Thanks to Banga for building them and Len for being the crash tester!

Take it easy the first time you try them, go slowly over the See Saw!

Cheers
Track Crew

Flood Damage on Rotary Ride

Flood Damage on Rotary Ride

Below are some photos of the worst damage on the Rotary Ride from this weeks heavy rain. As you can see we need some help, so come along with some tools (shovel, spade, wheelbarrow, rake, etc.). It is an impressive sight!

Next Working Bee: Saturday, 19 April - 9am

Meet at Taylors Bluff to fix up the storm damaged Rotary Ride.
The track is fine from Huka Falls south to Taylor's Bluff, but in need of repair from Spa park north. You can still bike in most of the way from Spa park - the bridge is back in place.

Track Crew News - July 2008

It wasn’t long ago that every body was moaning about the dust and tracks getting a hard time. We have had the odd tree down but overall all the system is in very good nick and has handled the rain

The new track of the top of the Ground Effect Grinder is now joined up to Young Pines. Take it easy at the bottom one of the dips jumps up and grabs you.

This track is being funded by Rotary and is going to be an important link in the 70 km Huka Challenge MTB race. We still have some other links to built so we can run this race, this event is very important to our long term maintenance funding as it will let us keep expanding the system, so make sure you tell people about it.

The Day Nighter track has also had a birthday and is riding a lot smother faster. Murray Fleming has cleared off the trees that came down in the last blow so check it out, good way of making a Huka falls ride a bit longer or a night ride close to town.

Totara Gully is open again thanks to the DoC track crew they have done a great job. You still have to carry your bike for about 20 meters along the other slip near the Huka end but it no big deal its still being worked on.

Big Thank You to the people who turned up for coffee and to help dig out the tunnel under SH1. Being an inside job, it didn't matter that the weather wasn't the best....  Two and a half hours from woe to go. A great job done!

We have had the odd tree down and slip on W2K but it still seems to be getting a lot of riders which is great.

Can people please let us know via the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or give us a ring if they find a slip or a tree down please, just means we can get onto them faster.

Cheers

Hello everyone,

"Skunk works" have been at it again and you can now ride The Great Wall of Wairakei in the skills area (Photo at the end). We just have one (may be two) more brai testers to put in that area.

The new See Saw on the Luge seems to be testing people as well, good to hear that riders are checking it out before taking it on. It is no higher but is very steep and longer - Check out the videos (sm or large)

The track crew have a plan for the Tank Stand down hill (one of them crashed at the last race) and will get into it the moment we get a wet day and don't work on W2K. It has been getting a hard time in the races and dry weather.
Depending on how carried away we get we may have a working bee we are looking at some re-alignments.

Kevin Loe is marking out a new down hill track that will run between the road and the Cork Screw.
The track will be a short and full on down hill with jumps. You can then ride back up the road to get to the top again. This should work better for the down hill nutters on those heavy bikes.

W2K is now up to 6 Kms from the lake edge in Whakaipo bay. It is a great ride in and out now, still a bit soft,  but this rain will help. Thank you to all the helpers, who came and volunteered a day or two!
Remember the track is two way and we are getting more and more people using it now so be aware!

Totara Gully has two pine trees down on it at the moment  the DoC track crew guys will deal with ASAP this week. You can climb over them if need be.

If anybody wants to help marshal on the Moon Ride in May can you let us know or tell me at the Thursday race's please.
Doing marshalling is an important fund raiser for us so we can get all the maintenance done during the year. Its about the best working bee you can do!
We need day and night shift people or you can go all day (12hrs). You get feed and we will slip you some petrol money.

Cheers

June 08

Track Crew News - June 08

Thanks to all the people who have turned up at working bee’s of late.

We got the Rotary Ride fixed and open within a week only because people gave up some time on a Saturday morning to help us. Plus the Buzzard is much better to ride now the rutting has been cleaned up. Bike Taupo can’t do all the work by themselves on the budget we have we just have to many Kms of tracks so it’s great when we get help.

Seems to be a lot of riders around Wairakei, was very busy on Saturday, if you are a local and you see people looking like a stunned mullet at a sign post ask if they are lost and show them were to go.

We have pulled out of W2K for the winter; we got 3Kms out on the headland track so check it out it needs some traffic on it to pack it down. We still have the gully track and board walk to build in Kinlock which we will chip away at over the next few mouths

Lots of riders, walkers and runners on W2K so take it easy and get a bell for your bike it’s a hell of lot easier if you keep running into lots of walkers. And take in easy on the brakes, we have already had spend a day putting in rock braking points

Hope to start the new down hill off the top of the Ground Effect Grinder next month.
This track is being build so we can run race’s in a big figurer of eight and is being sponsored by Rotary as its going to be part of the Wild Side 70Km Mt bike race being held with around the lake.
It’s a great course and we have got it so you will only have to ride one little part twice. We will also have places you have never ridden before

Murray Fleming has done a lot of work on the Day Nighter track so if you want a  night ride check it out, more riders the better to help pack it down

We are working in with DoC to try and get something sorted out in Totara Gully, will have to reroute the track in one place and shift a bridge we think but will try and keep it nice single track

Cheers
